You're Sure to Recognize the Stars of the Amy Winehouse Biopic

We're well and truly in the age of celebrity biopics, with movies like Bohemian Rhapsody , Elvis and Rocketman making waves in Hollywood, and now Amy Winehouse is getting her own movie. Joining Rami Malek, Austin Butler and Taron Egerton, Marissa Abela will play Amy in Back To Black , a film honoring the late singer's life Lifetime, and named after Winehouse's 2006 second album. Included are hits like "Rehab" and "Tears Dry On Their Own." The film focuses on the Queen of Camden, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Back to Black will star some familiar faces who closely resemble the real-life characters they portray on screen. In January 2023, actors from the biopic were spotted filming outside Ronnie Scotts, the famous jazz club where Winehouse made his name.

Back to Black, written by award-winning screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh, will tell the story of Winehouse’s rise as a jazz singer from North London to global superstardom. The film’s official synopsis reads: “ Back to Black will focus on Amy’s extraordinary talent, creativity, and honesty that inform everything she does. The journey takes her from Camden High in the 90s to Taking the madness and color of the street to global adoration—and back again— Back to Black breaks through the celebrity mirror and takes a look at the journey from behind the mirror to see what Amy sees and how she feels."

As previously announced, Abela will play the main role of Amy Winehouse in Back to Black, with the actress best known for her role as Yasmine in BBC's Industry . Playing Winehouse's father Mickey is Eddie Marsan ( "The Thief, His Wife, and the Canoe "), and IMDb lists another actor who appears in the film as Ryan O'Doherty, He plays Winehouse's former partner Chris Taylor.

In a tribute to Winehouse, Abella shared several photos of Winehouse on Instagram along with a trailer for the film. The actor wrote in the caption: "And London. Here's to London. Because Camden Town didn't burn down. I love you, Amy."
