The best smart air conditioners to keep you cool all summer long

If you live somewhere without central air conditioning, window air conditioners and wall air conditioners are key to keeping your space comfortable during the warmer months. Smart air conditioning units also have some added benefits: they can sync with a smart thermostat and/or other smart air conditioners in the home. You can also make your smart air conditioner part of your automation, turning it on or off when specific conditions are met. In my own home, my smart air conditioner pairs with my voice assistant so I can ask Google to adjust the device to my needs.

As smart air conditioners become more competitively priced, and as smart features become more useful, opting for a traditional air conditioning unit makes less and less sense. Here are some of my favorite and most recognized smart air conditioning units.

Midea U-shaped intelligent inverter air conditioner

Midea 8,000BTU U-shaped air conditioner

I have owned three of these air conditioners and am very happy with them. Although U-shaped air conditioners are a little difficult to install, they are less conspicuous. The unit is split and the windows can be lowered all the way between the two sections. Installation of each unit takes approximately an hour, but once installed, there is no need to uninstall them during the winter. This air conditioning unit responds to most voice assistants and is available in a variety of sizes. My bills are down a lot compared to older air conditioner models, and the filter is easy to clean, which means I'm more likely to do maintenance. I appreciate the simple, modern design and the customer support is very responsive. Midea is often at the top of air conditioner recommendation lists.

  • Midea U-Shaped Air Conditioner 8,000 BTU , $357

  • Midea U-Shaped Air Conditioner 10,000 BTU , $419

  • Midea U-Shaped Air Conditioner 12,000 BTU , $459

Windmill smart air conditioner

windmill air conditioner

A windmill is a more traditional window air conditioner, but it's very modern and simple. Windmill has also received positive reviews and has high ratings on Amazon. Notably, it is favored for its ease of installation, which is often the most problematic part of owning an air conditioner. The device supports Google and Alexa voice assistants and works over WiFi. Windmill smart air conditioners are a good blend of the company's experience in HVAC and the intelligent integration of new technologies. I really appreciate how small the Windmill is at 6000BTU, making it suitable for small rooms. You can update to "WhisperTech" on larger units, which features dual air intakes for more efficient cooling.

  • Windmill Air Conditioner 6,000 BTU , $319

  • Windmill Air Conditioner 8,000 BTU , $369

  • Windmill AC 8,000 BTU with WhisperTech , $429

  • Windmill AC with WhisperTech 10,000 BTU , $668

LG dual frequency conversion smart air conditioner

LG 8,000 BTU Dual Inverter Smart Window Air Conditioner

The LG Dual Converter AC is a relatively new entrant into the field and has been mentioned frequently in this year's product roundups. Many reviewers note that it's quiet, which is very welcome for a window air conditioner. Dual inverters make it particularly efficient, and it pairs with Alexa and Google. Like the other ACs I've highlighted, the LG has a modern, clean look, but it has the shape of a more traditional AC. The filter is also washable, which is a nice feature (vacuums can only do so much). Although supplies are limited, the range comes in a variety of sizes.

  • LG Dual Inverter AC 8,000 BTU , $399

  • LG Dual Inverter AC 12,000 BTU , $529

  • LG Dual Inverter AC 14,000 BTU , $599
