Nando's now has a self-proclaimed "mare" as restaurants across the country are forced to close due to chicken shortages. On August 17, the restaurant chain had to temporarily close 50 of its restaurants in England, Scotland and Wales due to supply chain issues.
Nando's UK tweeted to its customers: "The UK supply chain is in a bit of trouble right now." "This is having a knock-on effect on some of our restaurants... We are doing everything we can to get PERi-PERi back where it belongs Place - on your plate!”
According to BBC News, the restaurant chain said the shortage was due to post-pandemic changes to delivery schedules, with staff being asked to self-isolate after being notified via the NHS app. Some restaurants have also posted signs in their windows saying the venues themselves are experiencing staff shortages and that they are "working hard to keep up with demand." The phenomenon has also affected companies such as KFC and dairy supplier Arla.
However, some have questioned whether the shortage could also be attributed to Brexit. Although he did not mention Nando's specifically, 2 Sisters Food Group founder and owner Ranjit Singh Boparan warned the government last month that the UK could soon face one of the worst food shortages in decades. "No one could have predicted that this toxic cocktail would come together at this time," he said (via Metro ). "It's a huge credit to everyone that our retail partners and wider supply chain are working more closely than ever to ensure we retrain our food supply. But we are in a time of crisis."
A spokesperson for Nando's said that "thanks to the hard work behind the scenes" the company hopes to have its restaurants back up and running by Saturday (August 21).
Fans of the restaurant were quick to vent their displeasure on Twitter. Check out some highlights below.
