Is it Beyoncé’s “Hold Up”? About Jay Z?

The beauty of lyrics is that they are completely open to interpretation and often contain some truth. The most authentic lyrics draw inspiration from real life, with some poetic license. Beyoncé's new album Lemonade debuts with an hour-long HBO special that feels like a documentary x corresponding music video. It's filled with palpable passion, anger, frustration and forgiveness. This has the internet speculating about whether Beyoncé's husband, Jay Z, cheated on her, whether he was the target of her wrath, and whether he was lucky enough to earn or deserve her forgiveness. Is the new song "Hold Up" about Jay Z's wandering?

Here's a sample lyric to get you thinking. Beyoncé sings poignantly: "Hold on, they don't love you like I love you/Slow down, they don't love you like I love you/Stand up, they don't love you like I love you/Stand down, They don’t love you the way I love you/Can’t you see that no other man is better than you/What a wicked way to treat a girl who loves you.”

We're not sure if Jay Z was actually unfaithful, or if "Hold Up" is an extended metaphor about rebuilding their relationship after other issues, or if Lemonade and its song are referring to her parents and their divisive marriage. In fact, there are more questions than answers, and we may never know. Bey might keep it secret or she might open up in interviews. That's all TBD.

But in "Hold Up," the speaker sounds like she's been cheated on by a man she's totally cheated on. She saw the signs and it made her doubt herself. Notice that she mentions what she considers to be perfect. She also asked if anyone else would be interested in him if he wasn't so famous. #burn.

Whatever happened, she became so angry that she wanted to physically harm someone. So there must be something big going on to make her so crazy.

Something feels wrong

Because it's wrong

Especially after midnight

I smell your secret, but I'm not perfect

I will always feel this is worthless

How could it become like this?

Browse your call list

I don't want to lose my pride but it makes me fucking pissed

Know that I stay sexy and know that I stay interesting

What I missed was probably my first time

What's worse, looking jealous or crazy?

Jealous and crazy

I seem to have been walked by recently. I have been walked by recently.

I'd rather be crazy

Wait, they don't love you like I love you.

Slow down, they don't love you like I love you

Take a step back, they don't love you like I love you

Back off, they don't love you like I love you

Let's imagine you've never been famous

Or master the wealth, they never label you a king

You never got out of the cage, locked up and roaming the streets

The baddest woman in the game never crosses your sheets

Can they ride a bike?

No, they used to avoid you and lie to you

But you all know we are made for each other

So I find you and hold you down

Miss Bei sings

what a shame

You let this beautiful love go to waste

I always keep it top notch, five star

Love in the back seat of the car

Make that wood just like make that wood

I leave like a boulevard

What's worse, looking jealous or crazy?

Jealous and crazy

I seem to have been walked by recently. I have been walked by recently.

I'd rather be crazy

I jump out of bed and put on my booties

I looked in the mirror and asked, "What's wrong?"

What's wrong, what's wrong, what's wrong

I jump out of bed and put on my booties

I looked in the mirror and asked, "What's wrong?"

What's wrong, what's wrong, what's wrong
