Before releasing "Single Soon," Selena Gomez poured out her love for "Sex and the City." Turns out, there's a good reason for that: The singer used the HBO series and one of Carrie Bradshaw's most grim yet memorable breakups as inspiration for her "Single Soon" music video.
Gomez's new song, which debuted on August 25, is a pre-breakup anthem, and in the opening lyrics, she ponders how to end the relationship. "Should I do it on the phone? / Should I leave a little note in his coat pocket?" she sings. Soon, viewers see her select the annotation option. She borrowed a dark breakup move from "Sex and the City" Season 6 Episode 7 "Post-it Notes Always Stick Twice" by leaving a farewell note on the way out.
In Sex and the City , Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) discovers a Post-it note shortly after her boyfriend Jack Berger (Ron Livingston) convinces her to give their relationship another try . His parting words are simple: "I'm sorry. I can't. Don't hate me." It's the exact same message Gomez left in "Soon to Be Single," before we see her dancing with her girlfriend in celebration. Apparently, she, like Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), can't help but admire the fact that it's "fucking neat."
As the dumpee, Carrie isn't thrilled about Post-it's breakup. She was so outraged by the note that she brought it to the brunch party and slapped it on the table for her friends to see. Later, she even told Samantha that he "left [her] in the most horrific way anyone could imagine." While this is controversial, there's no doubt that the breakup was memorable. It's been 20 years since this episode aired, and breakups are reappearing in pop culture.
Gomez teased a "Sex and the City" Easter egg while promoting "Sex and the City " ahead of the "Single Soon" premiere. She announced her single on Instagram on August 17, writing, "Y'all have been looking for new music for a while. Since I haven't quite finished 'SG3' yet, I wanted to put out a song I'll be releasing soon." A fun little ditty perfect for late summer. Save it now, August 25. Her post included six photos, one of which showed post-it notes stuck to a video game controller. on, just like in the music video. Days later, she lip-synced to Sex and the City audio, again hinting at an upcoming video.
After Gomez dropped "Single Soon," she described it on Instagram as "a playful anthem about being comfortable in your own skin and loving your own company." Since the real lessons of Sex and the City It's you who should find love in yourself and your girlfriend first, and it makes sense that she borrowed the series.
"Not Soon" is out now.
