PS5's next update will be a big one

While we wait for Sony to release any information about the PS5 Pro, there are some interesting and exciting changes coming in the upcoming software update. YouTuber Mystic shared details about the update in a video on Thursday, which includes a battery widget and the ability to choose a live wallpaper for the Explore tab.

Speaking of the Explore tab, this update mainly deals with that part of the PS5. In addition to the new look, it also details new information such as battery indicators for controllers and connected peripherals like the Pulse Elite. There's also a "Console Storage" tab here that lets you preview your storage and, if selected, will also take you to your storage settings. Look to the right side of the screen and you'll find game screenshots, game news, your wish list (which you can scroll through), and online content like your friends list, your friends' activity (including which games they're playing, and what they've won) trophy).

The Explore tab now also supports custom backgrounds, including screenshots and live wallpapers. Mystic shows off some options, all PlayStation-themed, that look great as the background for the Explore tab. That said, these wallpapers will disappear when you exit the Explore tab, so don't expect to wallpaper your entire PS5. (Man, I miss themes.) You can choose whether the Explore tab prioritizes solo content or friends content, or a mix of the two.

Since these changes primarily affect the Explore tab, they are only being updated for the United States at this time. For some reason, Sony hasn't opened up the Explore tab to any other regions, so if you're outside the United States, this update probably won't have much of an impact on your PS5.

This beta update follows last week's system update 9.00 for the PS5, which added small changes such as improved microphones and larger speakers on the DualSense controller, new screen sharing options, and brightness levels for the console set up.

How to install beta software on PS5

The update is currently in beta testing. If you want to try this and future beta software for yourself, you'll need to register as a beta tester with Sony. If selected, Sony will email you instructions for installing the beta on PS5, which should involve redeeming the emailed coupon.
