Before Jane the Virgin Season 3 premieres on The CW, it's worth understanding all the intricacies of Season 2. While I'm not as adept at witty plot summaries as the show's narrator (but I mean, who is?), I have to review Jane the Virgin Season 2. Yes, it’s difficult to review an entire season of a show as fast-paced, complex, honest, hilarious, and crazy as Jane the Virgin , but part of what makes this show so amazing is its sharp turns and unexpected of twists and turns. Just as the narrator of Jane the Virgin fearlessly delivers each episode with panache, I will also attempt to review Season Two.
While the season 1 cliffhanger of baby Mateo being stolen by Sin Rostro (aka Rose) was resolved in the first episode with Michael's help, there's plenty of other drama to come in season 2. Jane struggles between becoming a new mother and balancing parental responsibilities with Rafael, the crime boss storyline multiplied by two, and the romance reaches a climax when Jane finally decides between Rafael and Michael, Luisa finds With a new love, Rogelio and Xo work to finalize their relationship, and Alba rekindles an old flame. With Season 3 needing to resolve the many shocking revelations revealed in the final moments of the Season 2 finale, here's everything you need to know about the last season of Jane the Virgin before it returns on Monday, October 17. .
Michael goes undercover
Michael and Raphael, who were still fighting over Jane's feelings, had a heated argument, with Michael accusing Raphael of handing him over to the police because he didn't reveal he knew his ex-partner Nadine was Cyn Rose. Tero works. Things were looking very bad for Michael at this point, he was fired from the police force and Jane told him she couldn't be with him. He disappeared with Nadine for six months, but it turned out they had been working undercover to take down Rose - an idea suggested by his new partner Suzanne. Nadine is killed in the process (RIP!), and all this work leads Suzanne and Michael to a lead on another crime boss, Mutt. While chasing Rose again, Suzanne is shot and killed, and Michael finds Rose dead - allegedly killed by Mutt.
Raphael has some serious family problems
Speaking of Mutt, Raphael discovers that his biological mother (who abandoned him as a child) is actually the notorious crime boss. His mother Elena, alias Mutt, competed with Raphael's stepmother Rose. Mutt's men even kidnapped Rafael's sister Luisa early in season two, before she began dating Michael's partner Susanna. In the midst of all this family drama, Raphael finds his brother Derek, who seems sycophantic from the start. Unfortunately, Derek can't be trusted because he manipulated Raphael with their mother, and then Derek played her too, turning Mutt into a cop.
A simple dater is not Michael or Raphael!
The love triangle between Jane, Michael, and Rafael in Season 1 remains a major storyline (as it should be), but Jane is also spreading her dating wings in Season 2. After briefly dating Dax, a computer technician, Jane dated her graduate school advisor, the dreamer (who was literally in Jane's dreams) Professor Jonathan Chavez. This didn't last long either, and Jane ended up choosing to be with Michael instead of Rafael, but it was a refreshing change of pace to see our beloved Jane see what else was out there. Though any Jane the Virgin fan knows, when Rafael and Michael are fighting for your love, you really don't need to look to see what other fish are in the sea.
Petra has twins
As she plotted at the end of season one, Petra actually succeeded in artificial insemination in season two using Raphael's final sperm sample. She ends up getting pregnant with twins, and the person who's with her at birth is none other than Jane - because despite Petra's past attempts to ruin Jane's life, Jane is the kind of woman who'll still be there for you. Petra and Raphael playfully named the twins Anna and Elsa, unaware of the Frozen connection, while Petra struggled to connect with her new daughter. Jane also helped when the series tackled postpartum depression.
Xo and Rogelio broke up
Although Xo and Rogelio both admit to loving each other, Xo decides they should end their marriage and have it annulled during a drunken night in Las Vegas. That didn't stop them from dating each other, but when they realized they didn't see eye to eye when it came to having kids - Xo wanted to focus on her career; she wanted to focus on hers. Rogelio wanted a chance to raise a child - the two ended their relationship midway through season two.
Alba reunites with her first love
In addition to becoming a U.S. citizen in a very relatable plot that continued from season 1, Alba's other big story in season 2 was her reveal of her romance with Pablo, the man she was married to To Xo's father Mateo, the man Pablo had a previous relationship with. Xo reunites the two, but although Pablo shows another side of Alba, she is convinced that he is the curse of the family, and his arrival does bring more to the crew of Jane the Virgin Doom, among others. . .
Rogelio is kidnapped
Louisa's kidnapping was not enough for Jane the Virgin . After The Passion of Santos ended, Rogelio started a new time travel show, Tiempo a Través del Tiempo , and hired an assistant. Unfortunately, his assistant Paola is actually Lola, a stalking fan of the previously imprisoned Rogelio. After Xo and Rogelio break up, she takes him hostage and locks him up in his own home. The women of Villanueva, especially Jane, are concerned but believe he has become distant because of his breakup with Xo. He was eventually saved by his brother Michael (and his own quick thinking), but he was left emotionally affected by the trauma. In an effort to show support for Michael, Jane missed her own engagement party, causing an even greater rift between her and Michael's parents.
Jane and Xo had a huge fight
While engaged to Michael, Jane's best friend Lena planned Jane's bachelorette party, and despite the bride-to-be's reluctance, Xo went along. It's fun to see Jane letting loose with her drunken friends, but when Xo makes out with Lina's ex-boyfriend, Jane has had enough of Xo. She yelled at her mother and the two stopped talking. Rogelio came to the rescue and asked writer Dina to create Thiago's storyline to help Jane and Xo reconcile. . . This also leads to Rogelio and Dina's date.
Petra discovers she has an identical twin
Surprisingly identical twins might be too much for any other show, but it's perfect for Jane the Virgin . Petra's unadorned brunette sister Anezka shows up on Petra's doorstep, and although she looks innocent with her Czech accent, she's actually conspiring with their master manipulator Magda (who Killed Milos after blackmailing Petra into marrying him earlier in the season). Jane has difficulty training Anezka to be a waitress at a Marbella hotel and has a huge quarrel with Petra over her. But Petra shouldn't have to protect her long-lost sister, since the season two finale saw Anezka poison Petra, take over her identity, and sleep with the emotionally fragile Rafael. Season 2 ends with Petra unable to speak or move, and Rafael believing it is Anezka who is hospitalized.
Jane masters her M.A.
Jane becoming a new mother while in graduate school was a major storyline in season two. She changes mentors several times before eventually finding tough Professor Marlene Donaldson, who helps the show explore what it means to be a feminist. It wasn't easy for Jane to figure out what her essay should be, but it almost made her late for her own wedding, but she ended the season with a essay that she was truly passionate about and proud of. Plus, she's an all-star mom even as she deals with real-life issues like sleep training. How have I not mentioned how adorable baby Mateo is throughout season 2? !
Xo (maybe??) is pregnant
After messing up her lines in a cameo in Tiago , Xo sleeps with Rogelio's acting nemesis Esteban Santiago after seeing Rogelio happily dating Dina , even though she has no feelings for Rogelio. Rogelio discovers this huge betrayal after Esteban sends Xo a "sex basket" but forgives her at Jane's wedding. However, Xo's romantic relationship is sure to be more complicated in season three, as her storyline in season two ended with her staring in horror at a positive pregnancy test result, and the show hinted that if she was indeed pregnant, the baby would be Estaban's.
Jane marries Michael
In the season finale, Jane and Michael overcame many obstacles to finally tie the knot. Raphael all but admits that he still has feelings for Jane, but he follows Louisa's advice and doesn't crash the wedding. Rogelio caused some drama as Jane's wedding planner, but he did come up with the great idea of building Villanueva's house (which had been damaged by a flood) on the set of Tiago and holding it there reception. Like the narrator, you may have cried during the ceremony—especially when Michael read his vows in Spanish—and agreed with the Virgin Mary's words at the end of the ceremony, "Make love now, Jane!"
Michael was shot
Oh, do you think Jane will lose her virginity on her wedding night? Not so fast! After the reception, Michael and Jane return to Marbella and decide to have sex there. When Michael went to get ice (which could have waited!), he met his partner Suzanne in the hallway and realized she had lied about her identity. Unfortunately, she also knew the moment was out and she shot him in the chest. It turns out that Susanna was actually Ross all along, which helps explain why she's dating Louisa. But who cares about Rose and Louisa when you know season three will begin with Jane discovering her lover has been shot dead.
Guest stars rock the boat
Since Michael's filming recap is so depressing, let's focus on the more joyous topics of this very special guest star. Kesha appears as Jane's neighbor, whose music keeps Mateo awake at night. While Kesha didn't play herself, two other music stars arrived in Marbella along with Britney Spears, proving that Rogelio does indeed have famous friends. Rogelio also invited Bruno Mars to sing Jane and Michael's wedding song in the season finale.
If season 2 could end with Mars serenading Jane and Michael at their wedding, all would be right with the world. But, then again, ending on such a drama-free note doesn't do justice to Jane the Virgin or its stellar second season.
