Gilmore Girls , aka everyone's favorite comfort show, is beloved for its fast-paced dialogue, early 2000s fashion, and plethora of coffee jokes. But what doesn’t get enough attention is the hair transformation. Rory Gilmore is constantly changing up his look, alternating between long and short hair, and even going through a bob phase at one point on the show. But her most polarizing and underrated hairstyle didn't appear until season six.
When Gilmore Girls first aired in 2000, Rory was just 16 years old. As a high school student of that era, she didn't wake up at 5 a.m. and do tons of prep work like Cassie in "Euphoria." In seasons one and two, Rory was more of a straight-haired, middle-parted girl. She occasionally wore headbands, especially when she started attending Chilton, her staid private school. She also creates dazzling looks at prom, just like teenagers are wont to do.
Rory and her mom, Lorelai, kept it easy during their early years living in a quaint Connecticut town. When big local events include breakfast at a diner, a 24-hour dance marathon or a Chinese New Year carnival, low ponies are the way to go. The only time they tried curls or an updo? Apparently having dinner at Emily Gilmore's house.
After Season 3 ended, Rory was about to graduate, and she began to spice things up with layers and highlights — possibly to show viewers that she was growing up. At this time, Rory was working on a summer internship in Washington, D.C., and starting to apply to Harvard and Yale, so it made sense that she would have a more sophisticated style to go with it.
In season four, Rory grew her hair short to commemorate the start of college and her breakup with her high school boyfriend, Jess. By season five, her hair had grown into a long lob. But it wasn't until season six that the real highlight hit our screens: Rory's straight bangs.
In a completely relatable move, Rory encounters one too many problems in life and reacts immediately with bangs. It all came to an end in Season 6, which premiered on September 15, 2005 - a full 18 years ago. Rory's look went from small town girl to Ivy League in an instant, it was so refreshing.
The straight bangs are a departure from her usual soft curls. While definitely fashionable, especially for 2005, this look went some way to helping her fit into the DAR (a.k.a. a fancy job offered by her grandmother). This brings some changes to the country club.
Rory rocked bangs in one form or another throughout the rest of the show. Whether it's the original thick bangs, wispy bangs, or side bangs, it's clear that Rory—and maybe even Alexis Bledel herself—is all about it. We stand.
