Diablo Cody says Jennifer's body is 'obviously' weird

After years of fan speculation, Jennifer's Body writer Diablo Cody confirmed in an interview with Bustle that her 2009 classic "Obviously" is a queer film.

This horror movie centers on Jennifer (Megan Fox), who is accidentally transformed into a man-eating demon by her favorite band, and Needy (Amanda Seyfried), her loyal best friend. My dear friend, she lived to tell this story.

Jennifer's Body was harshly criticized upon its release, but it has experienced a resurgence in popularity, especially among women in the LGBTQ+ community who identify with Jennifer and Needy's complicated relationship. Fans debated whether the friends were romantic, with Jennifer joking that she went "both ways" and the pair kissing before she spiraled into a murderous frenzy.

"First of all, I think the relationship between Needy and Jennifer is obviously weird," Kody told Busy. "We didn't get to go there, at least not as much as we wanted to. Fortunately, the subtext was there and people were able to take it away."

Foxx also believes Jennifer's body is queer-coded, telling the New York Post in 2021 that many women told her the film led to their sexual awakening.

"I can't tell you how many girls, from 30 to teenagers — or, fuck, my age, too — have come up to me and said, 'I realize I'm gay because of you,' Or "Because of you, because of Jennifer's body , I feel comfortable coming out," she recalled.

Don't expect a sequel

Since Jennifer's Body has achieved cult classic status over the past few years, Cody is now motivated to make a sequel to the horror film, and she's ready to flesh out her idea.

If the studio greenlights a sequel, Cody wants to explore the origins of Jennifer and Needy's relationship. "I want to know what their background is. I know they've been friends for a long time, but let's talk about it," she said.

While it's unclear whether this storyline will see the original cast reprise their roles, considering Fox has previously explored the idea of a second Jennifer's Body installment, it's likely she will. "I don't think this is a difficult movie to make a sequel to," she told The Washington Post in 2021. "I mean, they should make it a TV show. That would be cool."
