No couple has more TikTok sales than Meryl Streep and Martin Short. The only problem is that they're not actually a couple. On the January 28 episode of Bill Maher's podcast Club Random , Short addressed the dating speculation surrounding him and Streep and dashed any hopes fans might have had.
"We're not a couple," he confirmed. "We're just very close friends."
That said, fans aren't the only ones hoping they go from friends to "power couple," as Maher put it when arguing why they would make a great match. "Well, you should, because there's nothing more powerful in Hollywood than a power couple," he responded. "It works for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, it works for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie."
There are only rumors in the building
Rumors began to circulate about the Murder in the Building co-stars dating after fans thought they were getting cozy and cozy at the 2024 Golden Globes. Their characters, drama producer Oliver Putnam and failed actor Loretta Durkin, also fell in love on screen, sparking speculation they might have translated into a real-life romance.
In October, reports surfaced that Streep had secretly separated from her longtime husband, Don Gummer, so the timing makes sense. "Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years, and while they will always care about each other, they have chosen to live apart," her rep tells People .
Shipping Streep and Short
They continue to provide funny, heartwarming moments during the One Murder press tour, like when Streep jokingly shoved Short's face aside at the AFI Awards after the Golden Globes. This only made fans pay more attention to the pair. While the two are not the same person, they speak highly of each other, and Short shared how nervous he was about working with Streep on the For Your Consideration campaign.
"I'll be honest with you, I've gotten to know Meryl a little bit over the years, but on the first day of shooting, I was a little bit incredibly nervous because I was thinking, 'I'm doing a two-person scene with Meryl Streep," he recalled.
It turns out the feeling is mutual. "Meryl said to me, 'Well, my nervousness is half as good now.' So I guess she was nervous to work with me," he added.
