If you're experiencing a Windows problem that's too complex to fix manually, you can try Reset this PC. It can completely reinstall Windows with just a few mouse clicks, and if it works, it can be very helpful.
If Resetting this PC doesn't work, you may receive this message or a similar one:
There was a problem resetting your PC
No changes were made.
The reason you're getting the error is simple: Resetting this PC isn't working. Apparently you're trying to fix another problem with a reset, but the reset tool itself doesn't work at all! Without more than a simple boot failure, it's difficult to know exactly why Resetting This PC won't boot properly.
There is no single solution to this error, but there are a few things you can try.
The Reset this PC error can occur in Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows 8. The following instructions apply to both operating systems.
Perform the following steps in the order shown, trying the easier fix first:
Restart your computer and try again (resetting is not the same as restarting).
A simple reboot is easy to try and often resolves unexplained problems. That may be all you need to do.
Run startup repair from the Advanced Startup Options (ASO) menu. This will attempt to fix an issue that is preventing Windows from loading, which may be why Reset This PC won't start.
To complete this step, you need to access the ASO menu. Once there, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair .
Use the sfc /scannow command to repair system files. Resetting this PC might be trying to use some important Windows files that are corrupted, which is why you're seeing this error.
You need to run a command to do this, which you can do from an elevated command prompt within Windows. If you cannot reach the desktop, use Command Prompt from the ASO menu. Instructions for both methods are provided in the link above.
Run system restore. This will undo any changes made to Windows files that may have caused the " There was a problem resetting your PC " error. Be sure to restore your computer to a point before the errors started occurring.
If you are unable to log into Windows to run System Restore, you can also do so from the ASO menu via Troubleshooting > System Restore or from bootable installation media (see last step below).
Repair the Windows recovery environment. If the WinRE image is missing or corrupted for some reason, a " There was a problem resetting your PC " error might be thrown.
To fix it, open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command:
reagentc /disable
Restart your computer, open Command Prompt again, and enter the following command:
reagentc /enable
This fix is only relevant for very specific situations, which may have nothing to do with what is causing the problem. Before continuing with this step, be sure to complete the other steps above.
If after trying all these suggestions you still can't fix the error, you can bypass it entirely by installing Windows from a CD or flash drive. Since your goal from the beginning is to wipe the entire drive and reinstall Windows, you can do this from the installation media.
For this task, you need to have Windows 11, 10, or 8 installed on a disc or flash drive. You will boot to that drive instead of the hard drive so that you can use the software installed there to reinstall Windows.
If you are unfamiliar with the boot process, learn how to boot from a CD or how to boot from a USB device.
