what to know

  • Select System Preferences in the Dock or from the Apple menu, then select Internet Accounts > X (formerly Twitter) > Next > Sign In .
  • To use the Shared Links sidebar, select Show sidebar icons and then select the Shared Links tab ( @ sign).

This article explains how to add X (formerly Twitter) to the Safari Shared Links sidebar so that you can view the tweets and links you follow on X, as well as retweets. The instructions in this article apply to Safari in macOS Sierra (10.12), OS X Yosemite (10.10), OS X Mavericks (10.9), and OS X Mountain Lion (10.8).

By default, bookmarks and reading list icons appear at the top of the Safari sidebar, giving you one-click access to a range of useful links. However, you must configure it in System Preferences before you can access the Shared Links sidebar.

In order for the Safari sidebar to work with your X feed, you must add your X account to your Internet accounts list. To set up a shared links sidebar, complete the following steps:

  1. Open System Preferences by selecting the System Preferences icon in the Dock or selecting System Preferences from the Apple menu.

  2. In System Preferences, select Internet Accounts .

The Internet Accounts preference window lists the Internet accounts you've set up on your Mac (such as your iCloud account) on the left. Internet account types supported by the operating system, such as Microsoft Exchange and LinkedIn, are listed on the right.

Apple updates the list of Internet account types with every macOS update. Therefore, what you see may change over time.

  3. Select X from the list on the right.

  4. In the window that appears, type your X username and password and select Next .

Instructions will appear for what happens when you allow OS X to log in to your X account:

    • You can post photos and links to X on Twitter.
    • Links in the X timeline appear in Safari.
    • Applications can be used with your X account (with your permission).

You can disable address book synchronization and prevent certain applications on your Mac from accessing your X account.

  5. Select Sign In to enable X access from Safari.

Your X account is now configured to allow OS X/macOS to use the service.

  6. Close System Preferences.

After setting up X as an Internet account, you can use the shared links feature in Safari. To do this, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Safari.

  2. Select Show sidebar icons.

At the top of the sidebar, three tabs appear: Bookmarks, Reading List, and Shared Links.

  3. In the sidebar, select the Shared Links tab ( @ symbol).

The shared link selection list contains tweets from your X feed.

When you first open the shared link selection list, Safari may take some time to pull and display the tweets.

  4. To display the content of a shared link in a tweet, select the tweet in the Shared Links selection list.

  5. To retweet a tweet from the Share Link selection list, control-select the tweet, and then select Retweet .

  6. To go to X and view a user's public account information, control-select the user's tweets and select Show on twitter.com .
