With a star-studded cast and critical acclaim, season three of Hulu's Only Murder in the Building is arguably the show's most exciting season yet. Luckily for fans, the showrunner confirmed the show would be renewed for a fourth season on the same day as the season three finale. "The trio's journey is far from over," Hulu tweeted.
The announcement isn't too surprising, either, given its success. Only Murder premiered as the most-watched comedy in Hulu history, and two years later, it continues to attract fans through word-of-mouth. (It doesn’t hurt that the show is also up for multiple Emmy nominations at the postponed 2023 ceremony.) In August, the season three premiere set a record with 719 million minutes watched.
Starring Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, the show tells the story of three neighbors who team up to solve crimes in a New York apartment building.
According to an interview with Screen Rant, before the third season began, co-creator John Hoffman ( "Grace and Frankie ") said that he hoped to "give us as many seasons as we want."
"When you bottle lightning in that way, there's a magnet for incredible talent and they say, 'Wow, this looks like fun. I'd love to be a part of that,' I hope it leads to a good, long life,” Hoffman said.
Casting directors Tiffany Little Canfield and Destiny Lilly confirmed to Vanity Fair that many stars wanted to be part of the magic . "People moved mountains to become available," Canfield told the magazine. "Everybody wanted to play."
Season 3 adds Meryl Streep, Jesse Williams and Ashley Parker.
Due to writer and cast strikes, its return schedule may differ from previous seasons, which all dropped in consecutive summers. But given the show's rapid production schedule — Season 3, for example, began filming in January and premiered in August — Season 4 could theoretically go on schedule if the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved soon.
