Olivia Wilde's Met Gala dress features large side cutouts

Olivia Wilde is known to have spicy red carpet style. For the 2023 Met Gala themed "Karl Lagerfeld: The Line of Beauty," the "Don't Worry Darling" director blended playful details with meaningful tributes.

While Lagerfeld is more closely associated with Chanel and Fendi (the brands he helmed until his death), his influence spans decades. Early in his career, he designed for many of fashion's most prestigious houses, including Chloé. Wilde's stunning gown was a replica of Lagerfeld's famous violin dress, which he debuted for Chloé in 1983. Thoughts on the red (read: white) rug? Yes, please.

A large violin encrusted with beads and crystals hangs from the torso of this floor-length violin. While the original version was released in black, with a much shorter hem and sleeves, Wilde's version is much more playful - totally true to her style.

Fashion girls know that 2023 is the year of skin, so Wilde's iteration features a larger waist cutout that falls all the way to the hip. The incision goes all the way around to create a completely open back. To match the pattern of the instrument, she wore a bracelet with the same gold-plated pattern. She wore drop earrings and her makeup looked natural.

Current Chloé creative director Gabriela Hearst paid homage to one of the most iconic designs from Lagerfeld's tenure at the brand, reimagining the surreal suit for Wilde. For reference, this is the original dress worn by Chloe Sevigny in 2013 (released in 1983).

Wilde was paired on the white carpet with Vogue China editor-in-chief Margaret Zhang, who wore a black version of the dress.
