If there's one trend in the food world that seems to have been on the rise over the past few years, it's fermented foods. Of course, fermented foods and drinks have been around for thousands of years. (See: beer, bread, and more.) But it wasn’t until recent years, as terms like “probiotics” and “gut health” were introduced into the health zeitgeist, that fermentation became a hot area in the food world. As hard kombucha and sourdough starter continue to infiltrate our kitchens. It stands to reason that foodie TikTokers would find a new fermented cocktail to make the foam. Introducing: The Pickle Martini.
The hashtag #picklemartini has racked up 1.6 million views on TikTok, with users sharing their favorite recipes for the perfect pickle martini. The drink uses pickle brine for a unique twist on the dirty martini, and is traditional yet playful Perfect blend. It might remind martini connoisseurs of a dirty martini. Or, if you're someone who insists on having a pickle before a game, a pickle martini might be your elegant way to convince your friends to give it a try. Believe it or not, it's pretty dignified to whip out a pickle jar and shot glass at the same time. Not to mention, pickle juice is known to reduce the taste of alcohol a bit, so this might be a surprising crowd-pleaser.
Here's everything you need to know about pickle martinis and how to make your own.
What is a pickle martini?
While the name may sound bold, a pickle martini is no different than a regular dirty martini. However, you can substitute a pickle brine for the olive brine typically used in dirty martinis to give it a salty and acidic flavor.
Not only does this drink add a fun twist to a classic, but the pickle brine is rich in electrolytes. So if you pour pickle juice hard enough, you may or may not avoid (or at least lessen) a hangover.

How to Make a Pickle Martini
Just like the perfect dirty martini recipe really comes down to how dirty you want it to be, the pickle martini largely comes down to preference. However, if you're looking for a simple recipe, this TikTok recipe based on Elizabeth Minchilli's Pickle Martini will keep it classic.

raw material
2 ounces gin (or vodka, if preferred)
1 drop absinthe
1 teaspoon kimchi brine (or appropriate amount)
Pickle spears or gherkins (optional for garnish)
process
Combine ingredients in a martini shaker filled with ice and shake. Pour into martini glass. Minchley cut dill pickles in half and added them to her cup, but other TikTok users used gherkins (aka baby pickles) as a garnish. Be prepared to frown a bit on your first sip, then enjoy.
