Everything you need to know about Netflix's Big Mouth spinoff

If you enjoyed the crude humor of Big Mouth , you'll likely enjoy the upcoming new series HR . Don't be fooled by the show's title, though. The " Big Mouth" spinoff will explore "the daily lives of the creatures that help humans navigate life's journey." With character names like "hormone monster" and "depression cat," HR departments clearly aren't afraid to peel back the layers of universal problems faced by humans.

Collider notes that HR will be a more "adult series" than its predecessor, focusing on Big Mouth 's hormonal monsters. Although given that the series on which the show is based has been described as "harmful to children" by the National League for Decency due to its sexually explicit content, it's hard to imagine how its creators might up the ante this time around. In December 2021, executive producer Mark Levin told Inverse that they wanted to "expand the Big Mouth universe," which HR pitched as " Big Mouth meets The Office ." Human Resources Voiceover and Drama

"Big Mouth" actors Maya Rudolph and Nick Kroll will lend their voice talents to the animated series, playing the hormonal monster Connie and the hormonal monster Morrie, respectively. Other actors voicing the loudmouth characters in HR include David Thewlis ( Fargo ) as the Shameful Wizard and Brendan Kyle Goodman ( Feel the Beat) as Love. Bug Walter, Pamela Adlon ( King of the Hill ) as Sonia the love bug, Thandie Newton ( "Westworld ") as the hormonal monster Mona, Jemaine Clement ( "Moa" ) "Na ") plays Simon Sykes, Maria Bamford ( "Arrested Development ") plays the anxious mosquito Tito, and Bobby Cannavale ( "Homecoming ") plays the hormone monster Gavin. In addition, Aidy Bryant ( "Saturday Night Live ") will play the love bug Emmy, and Keke Palmer ( "Hustlers ") will play the love bug Rochelle.

On January 12, Netflix revealed that Rosie Perez ( "In Color" and "The Flight Attendant" ) and Henry Winkler ( "Happy Days ") will play the new characters "Petra" and "Ambition Elf" respectively. Voiced by "Sad" Keith. Sandiwe Newton and Bobby Cannavale will also guest star.

Then, on March 1, Netflix announced a slew of new creatures and humans. Speaking of monsters, you can expect to hear about Helen Mirren as shame wizard Rita Saint-Swedens, Hugh Jackman as seductive addicted angel Dante, and Lupita Nyong'o as shame wizard A Shah, Chris O'Dowd as the love bug Franny and Harvey Gillen as the spider receptionist José. On the human side, Ali Huang plays Becca, Janelle Monáe plays Claudia, Mike Birbiglia plays Barry, and Tim Robinson plays Doug.

Where Big Mouth focused on characters and how they navigate life with hormone monsters, depression cats, shame wizards and more that dictate their every emotion, thought and feeling, HR will let viewers in The world of mythical creatures and see how they work.

Randall Park ( "Fresh Off the Boat "), who plays "Logic Rock" Pete, briefly introduced his new character during a panel at the 2021 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. He declared via Variety that he is "very much a logic rocker." Parker added, "I feel like this part was written for me...I'm very logical, organized, and clean. Pete does everything by the book, just like me. He has rock-hard abs."

At the same event, Kroll, who co-created Big Mouth and Human Resources , The differences between the two series and the characters in each show were identified. “These characters represent major forces in the human condition,” he begins. "The challenge is that these characters don't just function as one thing they do professionally. Logic is filled with a lot of emotion and love that goes against his nature. It's a joy to develop characters in such a complex way."

In the June 2021 HR announcement, Kroll expressed his excitement for the series on Twitter, adding: "This. Show. Is. Mad."

HR trailer and release date

Ahead of the debut of the HR trailer, the Big Mouth season 5 trailer features some characters from the spin-off series. In the NSFW video clip, love bugs Walter (Goodman) and Sonya (Adlon) appear alongside hate worm Rochelle (Palmer). Walter is introduced as Nick's love interest, and Sonya plays Jesse's (Jesse Klein) love interest to help her channel her feelings for Ali (Huang). Rochelle stayed true to her character, briefly expressing her distaste for another character's dance moves with an "Oh, come on" comment.

According to TVLine, Goodman encouraged Nick to "pursue his feelings for Jesse until she publicly rejected him," which became the reason Walt eventually turned into a hate worm. In turn, Rochelle fueled Missy's "hate spiral" during Jesse and Ali's storyline.

Netflix released the first official trailer for HR on January 12, introducing viewers to the fantastical members of the titular department, who each care for the humans whose lives they guide. Along with the video's premiere, the streaming platform also announced that "HR" will premiere on March 18.

On March 1, Netflix released the first full trailer for the new series, and as promised, it already looks messy and contains more adult themes.
