How to remove cold sore scars

Cold sores are terrible, and the scars they can leave can be worse, especially when you may feel like you'll never fully heal. Luckily, I’ve compiled a few of the most effective strategies for getting rid of cold sore scars. Follow these tips and you’ll have cold sore scar-free skin in no time!

If this is your first time dealing with cold sores and scars, you're not alone. The World Health Organization recently stated that nearly two-thirds of the population has herpes, which translates to approximately 3.7 billion people worldwide. So, literally, you are actually the majority.

How you initially treat your cold sore can minimize potential scarring, so to be safe, talk to your doctor if this is your first time. But generally speaking, you don't want to choose cold sores (ever), and you can use over-the-counter cold sore creams to help treat them. If you really want to hide it, be sure to check out this great tutorial from Bustle lady Shea Simmons on how to cover up a cold sore.

Once your acne is gone, follow these tips to help fade scars as quickly as possible. Keep in mind that this will take some time, so please be patient.

1. Vitamin E oil

Vitamin E Capsules , $24, Amazon

Dr. Oz shared that vitamin E capsules can effectively fade cold sore scars. Simply open the capsule and apply the oil directly to the scar every day for several weeks.

2. Blemish cream

Ambi Skincare Lightening Cream , $8 , Amazon

If your cold sore scars are particularly deep, you can use a bleaching lightening cream designed to help lighten scars. But if you have particularly sensitive skin, I recommend applying a small dab of the cream to other areas of your body to ensure you don't get an allergic reaction.

3. Mild exfoliant

Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub , $28, Nordstrom

Scrubbing your lips with a gentle exfoliant a few times a week can help remove dead skin cells and gradually smooth scars. But remember to emphasize the word "gentle" and try not to rub too hard to avoid accidentally irritating the scar.
