This year, The Hive has another reason to be thankful : Renaissance: Beyoncé’s film had its world premiere over Thanksgiving weekend. Not only does this milestone bring us closer to the concert film's theatrical release on December 1, fans also learned some highly anticipated details.
One concern among fans is that songs will inevitably be cut in order to make her three-hour Renaissance tour more cinematic. Her film is 2 hours and 48 minutes long, with added behind-the-scenes footage of Beyoncé's "process," so yes, some tracks had to be sacrificed. However, the New York Times review was reassuring that most of the cuts were from the "folk-heavy intro" and beyond that "almost every other song" made the cut.
Create a renaissance cut
Given Beyoncé's penchant for privacy, it's no surprise that the Renaissance premiere was closely guarded. According to Rolling Stone , attendees will be required to hand over their phones during the screening and store them in a special magnetically sealed case. Still, details are emerging. According to Variety , the five songs that were cut include "1+1," "I Care," "Rather Die Young," "Love on Top" and Beyoncé's cover of "I'm Going Down."
Television personality Kalen Allen, who was lucky enough to be in the audience, shared that the cut list of songs could have been longer. Obviously, we have Beyoncé's 11-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, to thank for saving some lives. "Bey wanted to cut some of our favorite songs but Blue wouldn't agree, ugh!" he tweeted after the premiere.
Fans "pinch"
For the Beyhive, no amount of Beyoncé is too much. Fans are "extremely anxious" at the thought of their favorite tracks being cut. After Deadline reported that "most" of Renaissance 's album, as well as early hits like "Partition," "Drunk in Love" and "Formation," were part of the movie, one fan responded on Said: "What did Renaissance songs get?" Tsk, I'm sweating. "
The idea for the clip led them to look for other ways for Beyoncé to share her entire concert. "I hope Beyoncé plans to release a Renaissance Tour live album, especially since she cut songs from the documentary," one fan who addressed the issue wrote on Twitter.
Another added, “What I’m getting from the Renaissance Films details is that there needs to be a longer director’s cut… which means every song in the tracklist will be previewed along with the documentary; boom… … Or make a movie first and then do a documentary separately.”
Despite the cuts, fans may take comfort in the fact that there's something special for patient moviegoers. "In the end credits, there's a surprise," Allen tweeted.
