More than a decade ago, Taylor Swift collaborated with 14-time Oscar-nominated songwriter Diane Warren on a song during the writing process in 1989 . Somehow it didn't make it onto the album. But finally, on October 27, "Say Don't Go" debuted as a "From the Vault" track on 1989 (Tyler's version) .
After fans raved about the song, Swift gave her collaborator a sweet gesture.
"an elegant gesture"
Following the album's release, Warren received a bouquet of flowers from Swift in recognition of her contribution to 1989 (TV) , and she immediately shared a photo of the gift on X (formerly Twitter).
"Just got this from @taylorswift13 instead of the cat I already had," she quipped. (In her reply, she said the cat's name was Bunny.) "If you've ever wondered why she's the greatest artist on earth, this kind and graceful gesture is another reason why."
In her message, Swift said writing with Warren was "a dream come true." "I hope you enjoy 'Say Don't Go' as much as I do!!" she wrote. "Biggest hug! Love you, Taylor."
Warren has been basking in the success of "Say Don't Go" since the song's release, even pointing out how Billboard named it their favorite Vault Song of 1989 . "This is my favorite too," she said with a goofy emoji.
Warren works (usually) alone
She discussed her songwriting process in an interview with the Daily Mail, saying she usually writes alone, but not Swift, and praising her work ethic.
“She was a joy to work with and it was an amazing collaboration,” she said. "She made a big impression on me because I'm a workaholic. I came to work on New Year's Day and she came too!"
In another chat with Rolling Stone , she admitted she wondered why "Say Don't Go" didn't make the 1989 tracklist in the first place, and said she was dissatisfied with Swift's fan-centric approach to writing surprise. “She was very particular about the way she expressed certain things,” she said.
"She's deeply aware of how much her fans want to hear something. I can't explain it, but that's probably why she's the biggest fucking star in the world."
