Twitter can't believe Madonna biopic was scrapped

Playing Madonna in a biopic directed by the Queen of Pop herself seems like the role of a lifetime. Even the audition process requires a grueling boot camp. The 64-year-old icon announced the project in 2020. "No one will tell my story but me," she explains on her website, especially "misogynistic men."

The opportunity to play and collaborate with the "Like a Virgin" singer piqued the interest of several Hollywood heavyweights, including Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie and Julia Garner, as well as singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira. To prove their mettle, auditionees had to go through a rigorous audition process now known as "Madonna Boot Camp," which included reading and singing auditions, The Hollywood Reporter reports . It also includes up to 11 hours of intense choreography sessions with Madonna or her choreographer. Anna 's Garner finally landed the coveted role in August 2022.

But on January 24, Variety announced that it would no longer be producing the biopic. Regardless, Madonna will be busy - her celebratory tour will cover 35 cities from July to December. Twitter couldn't believe the actors went to all this trouble for nothing. "Julia Garner realizes she attended Madonna camp for nothing," one tweet began.

The Ozark star isn't the only one Twitter feels sorry for. User marykatecarr_ wrote: "Madonna training camp attendees need to unionize."

Some users teased the whole boot camp process, suggesting Madonna had been planning it all along. “Something tells me that Madonna wanted a biopic of her own and she canceled it, and it wasn’t really about the movie but it was an experiment to see if people actually cared about her; [so she] Canceled tour and announced tour with 10,000 tickets,” user omgklayton posted.

While there's no hope of seeing Garner play Madonna, another user pointed out that Evan Rachel Wood in Strange: The Al Yankovic Story "remains Madonna's only film image."

But never mind that the biopic probably won't happen. What Twitter really wants is to broadcast training camp. "What I really need is a documentary about Madonna's training camp because this is crazy," one user wrote. A petition calling for Boot Camp to be aired as a documentary or series seems to have become a consensus.

Or, at least, give fans a Hollywood Reporter roundtable .

Rebellious hearts—aka Madonna fans—have spoken out. Boot camp is “what people really want.”
