Britney Spears has found her voice again — but maybe not on stage. In her new memoir, The Woman In Me , the singer answers one of her most frequently asked questions: Will she perform again and return to the world of music?
In the book's final chapters, Spears takes fans through her daily life after her 13-year conservatorship ended, which included rediscovering her love of singing.
"I truly feel reborn," she wrote. “I was walking around the house singing, just like I did when I was a kid, and I loved the feeling of the sound leaving my body and bouncing back to me. I found joy again in why I sang in the first place. It felt so important to me It’s sacred to me. I do it for myself, not for anyone else.”
Will Spears perform again?
While Spears is finding solace in singing to herself, she's not yet ready to decide whether to expand her passion into performing live for larger crowds.
“I keep getting asked when it’s going to happen again,” she wrote. "I admit I'm struggling with this. I enjoy dancing and singing as much as I did when I was younger, not for the benefit of my family, not to get something, but for myself and for my true love of it."
She added: "Being an entertainer is great, but over the past five years my passion for performing in front of a live audience has waned. I do it for myself now. I feel God more when I'm alone ”
Recording of "Hold Me Tight"
While Spears isn't ready to hit the stage yet, she's more open to recording new music at her own pace. In August 2022, she released her first song in 13 years that was entirely under her control, "Hold Me Closer" with Elton John, an experience she detailed in her memoir .
"Sir Elton was friendly and made me feel very comfortable," she wrote. "I was nervous because it would be the first time in six years that the world would hear my voice on a new song, but I believed in the song and myself, so I did it."
"Hold Me Closer" became a Billboard Top 10 hit in one day and reached No. 1 on streaming services in 40 countries. "My first No. 1 single and longest-running single in almost a decade. And on my own terms. Total control," she commented. “It doesn’t feel good — but it feels great.”
While Spears loves making music for fun, recalling that she once "wrote six songs in one day" in a studio in Malibu, she made it clear that a full-scale musical return isn't her top priority.
"My focus at this time is not on advancing my music career," Spears wrote. "It's time for me to work on getting my spiritual life in order, focusing on the small things, and slowing down. It's time for me to stop being what other people want me to be; it's time for me to truly find myself."
