Bridgerton fan theories flourish over mysterious Pauline cut

Pauline's interaction won't be too brief to interest Bridgerton fans. The first clip from Season 3 was released to much fanfare on February 1, but equally intriguing are the additional clips from Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton), Quietly ends in Netflix's Next preview for 2024. It only lasts about three seconds—and what a fulfilling three seconds it is. Pauline's video quickly sparked a flurry of speculation from fans, and Coughlan himself responded to it.

Mysterious Pauline Moment

In the clip, Penelope and Colin appear to be alone together outside. Thanks to previously released photos, we know it's from Season 3, Episode 2. However, even for fans who have read Julia Quinn's Bridgerton book series, it's not clear what those few seconds were about. It's a moment filled with intense stares and gasps. Whether they're about to kiss or argue - or if they've already done so - is anyone's guess.

Fans responded to the clip on social media platforms, and while they had different theories about the scene, they all agreed that the conversation kept repeating in their heads. "This scene is definitely the craziest thing we've ever seen!" one fan wrote on Reddit. "What's going to happen here? I don't know. I love the chemistry."

need context

After Coughlan posted the news on Instagram on February 2, her comments section was filled with responses from equally confused but curious followers who wanted answers. "Is she crying!? Is she scared!? Is there hatred in her eyes!? I need answers!!! I can't stand it," one person wrote. Many demanded to know if they were "going to kiss," but others suggested more anxious scenarios, like a "'don't marry him' scenario."

Fans are also busy on X (formerly Twitter). "I was thinking about this scene this morning, if it was a confrontation scene where Penelope tells Colin to go but he doesn't, he just starts getting closer..." suggested another Bridgerton die-hard.

Others noticed the same movement. "Colin seems to be walking towards Penelope without even realizing it," someone else wrote. "Oh, etiquette is immediately thrown out the window."

Some believe it captures the moment Colin finally "met her for the first time", another team speculates that he learned she was Lady Whistledown at that moment, and many more simply can't stop thinking about it . As one person said, "[I] would lose my mind thinking about what this scene means."

Coughlan likes to tease

For Coughlan, this craziness is a fun part of her job. She took to her Instagram Stories on February 2 to let fans know that she's been reading and enjoying their theories. "The theory I read about this scene is the funniest thing I've read in a long time," she wrote.

With Coughlan offering no further clues, fans are seemingly left to speculate until Bridgerton Season 3 premieres on May 16.
