During 2024, you can get thousands of free ebooks if you know where and when to look. Amazon offers free Kindle e-books to readers year-round, with new opportunities emerging every month.
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of Stuff Your Kindle Day, the largest free e-book event of the year, offering over 1,000 free e-books. But that’s later this year. In May of this year, Prime members can get two free Kindle e-books from Amazon's First Reads program, one of which is this month's short book.
What is Amazon's First Reads program?
Amazon First Reads is a program for Prime members. Through the curation of First Reads editors (one of the many benefits of Prime membership), members can get early access to new e-books of various types. Prime members can choose to download one free e-book each month from a rotating list -- though some months this goes up to two, and non-members get them at a discount. These e-books can be read on any compatible Kindle device or through the free Kindle app.

How to Get Free Amazon Kindle Books for May
Visit the First Reads landing page to see the complete list of e-books available this month. Once you find a book you're interested in, click the "Buy Now" button. Make sure you are not redirected to the Kindle mobile app as you won't see the free books option; instead, use your browser (or "check out" the free books directly on your computer).
Please make sure you do not click the "Pre-order for..." button, which will direct you to pay; instead, click the "Read for Free" button under the First Reads banner. This will send the e-book directly to the Kindle connected to your Amazon account.

You'll know you've done something right when you see the "Thank you, [your name]!" order summary indicating that the e-book is automatically being sent to your Kindle Cloud Reader.

This month, you can choose from 8 Kindle e-books and get a free "bonus short read," " The Tiger Chair: A Short Story ," by Max Brooks, author of " World War Z. "
Amazon notes the genre of each book above the title, providing a quick way to narrow down your choices. If you hover over "View Editor's Notes" under the "Shop Now" button, you can also read a brief blurb from the First Reads editor who selected the book.
