Nicola Coughlan felt 'stressed' while filming intimate scenes of Bridgerton

Warning: Spoilers for Bridgerton ahead. Nicola Coughlan felt "tremendous pressure" while filming a sex scene for Bridgerton season 3.

Co-stars Coughlan and Luke Newton spoke to Netflix about the show's third chapter, which will air on May 16, and they discussed the carriage scene in Season 3 Episode 2.

The scene, which sparked a huge response from fans, saw Penelope Featherington (Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Newton) in the back of a carriage after Colin confessed his love and impromptu proposal Close contact.

While the pair "loved" how the scene turned out, Newton said "a lot went into preparing" to film it. Coughlan agreed, adding that there is pressure to satisfy the Bridgerton fan base.

“The fans are horny little devils and they’re constantly sending us pictures of carriages and carriages rocking,” she said. "So, it had to be beautiful, touching, romantic and sexy, which is a lot of things."

The co-stars also noted how important the scene was to their characters. "After the kiss, in her mind, she completely messed it up and she was like, 'He's never going to like me. He doesn't like me. It's embarrassing,'" Coughlan continued. "When he got on that carriage, there was no part of her that thought that was going to happen."

Coughlan discussed filming the sex scenes in Bridgerton Series 3 in a recent interview with British talk show This Morning , revealing that her and Newton's voices could be heard on set.

"Luke and I actually had a lot of say in what we wanted to do and we had some ideas about how we wanted things to go," she said. "It was great because we really felt like we were in control."

The pair once again reminisced about filming the intimate moment in an interview with Australia's 7 News. When asked if reports that they broke furniture during a sex scene were true, Coughlan responded: "Yes, we did."

“It feels like a very safe space,” Newton added. "Sometimes we can explore a scene and try different approaches, but end up with a piece of furniture being broken."

Coughlan also recently told Ireland Today FM that the graphic scenes were "liberating" to film, but admitted she wouldn't be sitting down to watch them with friends and family anytime soon. "I asked for a PG version for my mom," she said, joking that season three "will be significantly shorter" for her mother.
