Resorts with the best weather in September

If you've had enough of the hot weather we call it, you might be looking forward to fall, which will bring more comfortable temperatures. While you might think September would be a relief from the hot weather, I feel I should remind you that September is often just as hot as August, especially in places like New York, Texas, and California. So instead of blowing your hard-earned vacation savings on another trip to the local beach, head to somewhere with balmy September weather for a short fall getaway.

Here I've collected a list of cool spots with average temperatures in the mid-70s in September. This perfect temperature gives you the opportunity to spend time outside and enjoy the last bits of summer without having to worry about melting or burning to death. Before you know it, it'll be too cold to enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors, so grab some sunshine while you can and enjoy the end of summer at one of these anti-summer spots. Just don’t forget to bring sunscreen because despite the cool weather, it’s still summer.

No offense to school-age kids, but September is the best time of year to visit the Grand Canyon as the summer crowds go back to school and all major trails remain open. Enjoy desserts at more comfortable temperatures and trails with sparser crowds.

Maine is great year-round, but by late summer, temperatures in this coastal state can drop significantly, making outdoor activities much more bearable. When the summer crowds leave town, head to Acadia National Park to hike, dine on fresh seafood on the shores, and enjoy water sports.

This idyllic upstate New York town is 90% beautiful farmland and 10% cute hotels, restaurants, and shops. Stay in Troutbeck, catch a movie at the local theater, and pick all the berries without the summer crowds.

In September, this stunning city sees temperatures in the high 60s but still offers beautiful sunny days to visit and enjoy uncrowded tourist attractions. Alternatively, if you prefer to cruise on the river or enjoy water activities, you will be able to do so at a more affordable price as it is the beginning of the low season in Zurich.

Come September, this perfect summer island takes on a whole new vibe. As holidaymakers return to the mainland, temperatures drop and the beaches clear up, transforming this bustling hotspot into a low-key paradise. Wait until September to see Nantucket for yourself, it’s worth it.

Vashon Island, Washington

This Washington Inlet Island is only accessible by ferry, making it extremely remote and unique. While the Pacific Northwest may thrive year-round, September brings cool, dry air that makes it even more enjoyable to be there. If you're looking for some late summer tranquility, Vashon Island is ideal.
