For fans of Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus, August 25th will be the best of both worlds. The two actors and singers will be releasing new music that day - "Used to Be Young" by Selena Gomez and "Single Soon" by Gomez. Despite the possible competition, the Disney veterans embraced their shared release date and posted an equally hilarious and fitting throwback clip of Hannah Montana to their Instagram Stories on August 18 for There was a lot of hype for these two singles.
Taking fans back to 2007, Gomez and Cyrus each shared scenes from Hannah Montana Season 2 Episode 18 "Is This What Friends Are For?" Gomez, who guest stars as pop star Mikaela, has previously positioned herself as a rival to Miley/Hannah. The two teens were friendly while volunteering for the United People's Relief Telethon, but they were careful to snipe at each other every chance they got. Fittingly, the hilarious throwback shows the young stars taking quips at each other about their new singles, before falling into the likes of "Used to Be," "Never Was," "Lip-syncers" and "Bra Stuffers." insult.
This is all about the love between their real-life companions. “@mileycyrus and I both have a single coming out soon that we’ll be releasing the same day,” Gomez wrote on her Story, referencing her song’s title. She then also worked for Cyrus, adding, "We've been friends since we were young."
Cyrus' Instagram Stories take a similar approach. "@selenagomez and I are both dropping our singles soon..." she wrote. "I say we #USEDTOBEYOUNG." She also retweeted Gomez's story.
The two former child stars were often at odds with each other during their Disney years, in part because they dated Nick Jonas twice in the late 2000s. However, Gomez debunked the rumors in 2016, saying there was never any real beef. "We never argue," she told W magazine. "When we were 16, we both liked the same boy. That's the Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan thing: 'Oh my gosh, we like the same boy!' We Now I am completely settled in my life.”
The two have since shown genuine support for each other, including Gomez opening up about her bipolar disorder diagnosis for the first time in 2020 during Cyrus's Bright Minded Instagram conversation series. Most recently, Gomez said Cyrus gave her the hosting skills she gained while performing on Night Live in May 2022, which gave her the opportunity to feature Miley Cyrus in a monologue image of. The joke went down well with Cyrus, who later tweeted: "Omg I'm Miley Cyrus," and tagged Gomez.
With their single coming soon, we may see more displays of their friendship and mutual support. Fans are here for it—and they hope the collaboration goes well, too.
