What to do in Albuquerque

When most people hear "New Mexico," they think of Santa Fe, with its historic adobe buildings, world-class museums and quaint, winding streets. But as the state's largest city, Albuquerque has plenty for visitors to explore off the beaten path. When I moved to the city a few years ago, I was surprised to discover a whole new world of food, local art, and scenic charm that I never expected.

Wondering what to do in Albuquerque? If you're interested in learning more about the city, there are plenty of things to do here, from shopping to sightseeing. Head to local galleries downtown to view exquisite art and crafts from Southwestern artists, or find unexpected gems in outstanding vintage and antique shops.

With its hip, easy-going vibe, rich local culture, and central location, Albuquerque is a great destination for an offbeat Southwest vacation. If you love it as much as I do, you might even want to stay! Read on to discover seven of my favorite spots in this historic city. Be forewarned, you may find yourself suddenly craving green Chile and blue desert skies.

1. Cycling along the Rio Grande del Bosque

For travelers who prefer natural attractions to urban culture, the Rio Grande Forest winds its way through Albuquerque for miles, offering wide riverside trails suitable for walking and biking—so bring yours running shoes! Stop by the Rio Grande Nature Center, where you can meander through interpretive nature trails and demonstration gardens, or—my Sunday afternoon activity of choice—relax and watch local wetland wildlife from the center’s glass-walled observation room animal.

2. Visit Nob Hill

Stroll the streets of Nob Hill, the city's most popular pedestrian area. Find unique homewares with a Southwest zen feel at Hey Jhonny, or, for the geekier side, find your fandom at your local comic book store, Astro Zombies. If you need to stop and take a break between shops, there are plenty of places to eat in the area. For a relaxing evening with friends, I love the Empire Boardgame Library, where you can rent hundreds of different games to play, order snacks or lattes at the coffee bar, and join local gaming groups. There's a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, from casual bars to full gourmet meals, so there's something to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

3. Visit exhibits at the Albuquerque Biological Park

If you're looking for a fun place to spend an afternoon, or you just love animals of all shapes and sizes, the Albuquerque Biological Park has everything you need for an unforgettable walk in the wild. I was impressed by everything here. I spent countless afternoons walking around the park admiring the ever-changing new exhibits. The Biopark complex consists of four independent parts. See exotic and familiar creatures at the zoo and aquarium, then stroll through the botanical gardens or try your hand at fishing at Tinley Beach.

4. See all the hot air balloons

Pack your warmest jacket and comfiest boots for an unforgettable early morning adventure. Every fall, Albuquerque hosts the International Balloon Fiesta, where hundreds of hot-air balloon enthusiasts from around the world launch their balloons into the desert sky over nine days. Get up early to watch the balloons take off, or book a ride with an experienced hot air balloonist for a bird's-eye view of Albuquerque. Pro tip: Take the local shuttle to Fiesta Park as parking can be difficult this time of year.

5. Visit the old town

If you want to step back in time, be sure to visit Albuquerque’s Old Town – it’s a historic paradise with authentic adobe buildings that house everything from candy and antique shops to quirky but educational International Rattlesnake Museum of America. For an unforgettable meal, make a reservation at my favorite intimate dining spot, Antiquity Restaurant. Or, learn about New Mexico art and culture at the Albuquerque Museum. Whatever you choose, you won't be disappointed with the area's Southwestern charm.

6. Hike in the Sandia Mountains

When you just want to get away from it all, why not put on your hiking boots and see the city from above? The Sandia Summit Tram takes you high into the Sandia Mountains for unparalleled views, hiking trails, and fresh air. If you're looking for an unforgettable evening, head to High Finance, a fine dining experience located in the Peak. Located two miles above sea level, the views are stunning and the food is delicious.

7. Visit the Los Poblanos Lavender Farm

One of my favorite locations for long vacations and short getaways, Los Poblanos Lavender Farm is a rural gem located just 20 minutes from downtown Albuquerque. It's the perfect base for your trip to the South West - conveniently located close to the city, but a complete experience in its own right. If you want to enjoy a luxurious desert getaway or just spend the day, stay in one of the suites at the authentic hacienda-style lodge. You can tour the facility, take a class, or enjoy dinner in the farm's own restaurant, which serves exquisite fresh ingredients from farm to table.
