OpenAI announced on April 1 that it would start making ChatGPT available to people without the need to create an account. Of course, a good rule of thumb is not to believe anything you read on the internet on the first of the month, but this is no April Fools' joke: you can actually start asking ChatGPT questions without having to log into an OpenAI account, or have an OpenAI account at all account.
OpenAI says it's rolling out this accessibility gradually, so you may not see the option to jump into a ChatGPT conversation right away. But whether it's today or next week, you'll soon be able to visit chat.openai.com, click on the "Message ChatGPT" text field, and ask the chatbot any question you like without interrupting your login. ChatGPT is more integrated into Google services than ever before: you don't need to think about whether you're signed in to a Google account before quickly searching for something. Now, you can apply the same logic to the ChatGPT problem as well. (Although I wouldn't recommend replacing Google with the free ChatGPT just yet.)
There are some caveats to this more open ChatGPT accessibility: For starters, as you'd expect, you only have access to GPT-3.5, which is no different than a free ChatGPT account anyway. More worryingly, however, OpenAI uses your quickstart conversations as part of its LL.M. training data. Whatever questions you ask ChatGPT after launching the bot without an account, OpenAI will feed that directly into its system. If you want to keep the conversation away from this training data, you need to turn off this default setting by clicking the question mark in the lower right corner, selecting Settings , and disabling Improve model for everyone .
OpenAI said it added additional "safeguards" to the experience and would block certain categories of prompts and spawns, without specifying what those categories were.
Additionally, you'll miss out on key features that account holders have by default, including chat history, shared chats, voice conversations, and custom ChatGPT commands. If you require any of these features when using ChatGPT, you should first create and log in to your account.
