what to know
- Easiest: Use Google Voice to record incoming calls; answer and tap 4 on your keyboard. The recording goes to the Voicemail tab.
- Or: Use the speakerphone on your iPhone to make a call. Record using Apple's Voice Memos app on a second Apple device.
This article explains two methods of recording calls on iPhone and provides tips on pre-installed and third-party software you can use to record calls.
The default Phone app does not support call recording. One of the easiest ways to record live conversations on your iPhone is to use a phone app that supports recording. Google Voice is a widely used free application that fits this bill. Other applications may require payment.
Google Voice only supports recording incoming calls, not making calls. To record outgoing calls at the same time, you need to use Voice Memos on your iPhone.
Follow these steps to record a live conversation using Google Voice:
Get the Google Voice app and set it up so you can make and receive calls.
Click on the three-line icon in the upper left corner.
Click Settings .
Move the Call Options slider to On/Blue.
When you receive a call that you want to record, answer the call.
Then hit 4 on your keyboard to start recording. Click 4 again or hang up to stop recording.
When you click 4, a sound will announce that recording has started, so it is not possible to record a live call without the other party knowing.
Your call recordings are stored in the Voicemail tab.
Google Voice isn't the only app that can record calls. We have other options at the bottom of this article. Many of these apps work by creating a three-way call with a call recording service. Call the agent, then the person you want to talk to, then merge the calls to start recording.
Don't want the hassle of setting up Google Voice to record calls? There is another way to do this, but it requires two devices.
Although the iPhone's Phone app doesn't support call recording, you can use it with Apple's Voice Memos app to get the job done. How to do:
Use the Phone app to start the call you want to record.
Tap Audio > Speaker to use hands-free calling.
Apple blocks you from recording hands-free calls using Voice Memos on the same device.
Get a second device with Apple's free Voice Memos app installed. Open the Voice Memos app.
You don't have to just use another iPhone. The second device can be an iPad or iPad touch, or even a Mac.
Click the red record button to start a new voice memo and hold the second device close to the iPhone.
After the call ends, you can share the recording by tapping Recording > Ellipses > Share > and selecting the app you want to use for sharing.
Don’t like the Voice Memos app? Any other recording software will work. You may get better results by connecting a microphone to your device and placing the microphone closer to your iPhone.

So yes, it can be recorded. Whether it's legal in your state or city depends on the laws that apply in your area.
Before recording someone else, know and understand the laws regarding call recording where you live. In some places, recording phone calls is illegal. In other cases, both parties to the call need to agree to the recording (this is called mutual consent), and in some cases, only one person needs to know about the recording (also called unilateral consent). Before recording anything, knowing the laws where you live can save you headaches and potential legal fees.
FAQYou can use FaceTime's screen recording feature to record your screen, but not the audio during a FaceTime call. Swipe to open Control Center > Tap Screen Recording > Open the FaceTime app and start the call > Then tap Stop to end the recording. Find the recording in the Photos app.
