How to Watch the Ghostbusters Movies in Order

This list covers all of the feature films in the Ghostbusters series released to date and provides some suggestions for viewing order, with very little difference between the films.

If you want to watch all the Ghostbusters movies in one place, you'll need to budget accordingly. Currently, no subscription-based streaming service offers all content, but you can rent (or buy) it all digitally from a single source.

While Ghostbusters has a staggering amount of media, including movies, TV shows, comics, and video games, the filmography is manageable. Despite being such a beloved franchise, you'll need to watch five movies in total to catch up on the series. Arguably four, but we'll get there.

While not all movies are available on streaming platforms, you can rent or buy them from storefronts like Amazon, Apple TV, and Google Play.

Entrance release Where to watch
Ghostbusters 1984 tubi
Ghostbusters II in 1989 rent or buy
Ghostbusters 2016 tubi
Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2021 • Fubo • Sling TV
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 2024 rent or buy

Don't let the number of sequels (compared to other prolific franchises like Star Wars or Aliens ) fool you. If you want to sit down and watch the full running time of all five movies back-to-back, you'll need to set aside 9 hours and 29 minutes in a day. If you decide to skip the 2016 standalone reboot, it will take you 7 hours and 32 minutes.

Watching all the Ghostbusters movies in chronological order is no different than watching them in release order, as the overarching story progresses linearly with each new film.

The 2016 reboot doesn't have to end in any particular place, so you can watch it first, last, in the middle, or not at all. If you do include it, you should watch the original 1984 film before the 2016 version so that some of the nods and jokes make sense.

Ghostbusters (optional) 2016 tubi

Regardless, 2016's Ghostbusters is a completely separate entity from the rest of the series.

Aside from a few Easter eggs and references sprinkled throughout the film, it has no connection story-wise to any of the older or newer entries. The overall narrative is similar, with scientists working together to "eliminate" ghosts, but the story is different (although many of the original cast members do appear as other people). You can think of it as an alternate version of the story, much like Batman Begins was an alternate version of the original 1989 Batman .

Likewise, 2021's Afterlife and its sequel Ice Cream have no connection to the 2016 film.
