'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' Season 17 Will Not Be the Show's Last

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia officially becomes the longest-running live-action comedy in history in 2021. Now, the show's legacy will only continue to grow after the long-awaited Season 16 aired this summer, leaving fans wondering if It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will return for Season 17.

Perhaps it's no surprise that the hit series was renewed not only for Season 17, but also for Season 18. The show's future was determined long before Season 15 in 2020, when FX announced that the show had been renewed for four more seasons, leading to (at least) Season 18. You might expect more: As creator and co-star Rob McElhenney tweeted at the time, " Sonny was originally set to be a 36-season arc. Very much. Happiness is half done.”

But the actor also told NME he would continue the show even longer than that. "How many more years do I have on this planet? I'll do this forever," he said in 2020. "If people keep watching and we keep having fun, why should we stop? This is my dream job. I never understand why people leave the show. I don't. I never understand that. This show is my lifelong dream to do Things. I don’t take it for granted. If they keep paying me and the audience keeps watching it... why should I stop?”

In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about IASIP Season 17.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Potential Premiere Date

Season 16 was produced on a very fast timeline, with filming starting in January and wrapping up for the premiere in June. If Season 17 follows suit and shoots this winter, it could theoretically be released as early as summer 2024. There's a two-year wait between seasons 16 and 17, though; with the cast still busy with other projects, it's definitely possible that the gap between seasons will continue to widen as time goes on. But if the show does go on forever — as McElhenney hopes — what’s an extra year or two?
