7 Movie Couples Who Fake Chemistry

Not all of the actors get along as well as their on-screen characters, which really shouldn't be a shock because of, you know, acting . Yet every time we learn about a pair having a hard time getting along on set, we're always surprised; how could two people who seem so perfect hate each other? It's especially bad when the movie couple is beloved by fans and hailed as icons — like Noah and Ally from The Notebook , whose relationship is decidedly closer than actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams The relationship is much better. Director Nick Cassavetes said the pair may have later become a real-life couple, but at the beginning of the film they couldn't bear to be in the same room with each other. At one point, Gosling even demanded that McAdams be kicked off the set of the film.

While Cassavetes' revelation is certainly shocking, it's not the first time we've discovered that the chemistry between a beloved movie couple was actually faked by the feuding actors. The movie romances of seven co-stars are too good to be true:

Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze

Pictures of Westerlund

Movie: Dirty Dancing

Question: Relations between the cast were already tense after a confrontation on the set of "Red Dawn ," but "Dirty Dancing" made it worse. Gray almost quit the film after learning Swayze would play her love interest, and they kept fighting on set, and that famous shot of Gray giggling and Swayze looking on in annoyance? No acting required.

Have they reconciled? Yes. They discussed their problems and became friends, often talking about each other's likes and dislikes. After Swayze's death in 2010, Gray even paid tribute to her late co-star on Dancing with the Stars by performing an emotional performance of a song from the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack.

Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio

20th Century Fox

Movie: Romeo and Juliet

The problem: Danes thought the prankster DiCaprio was immature, while he thought she was too nervous. To be fair, Dennis is only 17 and DiCaprio is only a few years older.

Have they reconciled? Okay, so as adults they may not hate each other as much as they did as teenagers, but that doesn't mean Denise is eager to reunite with her former costar on screen.

Lucy Liu & Bill Murray

Movie: Charlie's Angels

Question: Where to start? Murray stopped to scold Liu for not having talent? Teacher Liu beat him out of revenge? Neither of them appeared together in publicity for the film, and Murray declined to return for the sequel? Suffice it to say, the actors had some difficulty getting along.

Have they reconciled? At least not until 2009. In an interview, Murray defended his antics on set, saying: "If you were unprofessional and working with me, I would totally fire you... When our relationship was professional, if you weren't Get that done and forget it.”

Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn

New Line Cinema

Movie: Four Christmases

Problem: Witherspoon reportedly took issue with Vaughn's relaxed approach to filming because she preferred rehearsed scenes while Vaughn favored spontaneity. They clashed several times on set, and promotion for the film included the actors walking separate red carpets.

Have they reconciled? According to Witherspoon a few months into filming, yes. The actress said she and Vaughn are "very good friends" and any other rumors are ridiculous. We're not quite sure yet, though.

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp

Movie: The Visitor

The Problem: According to In Touch (please take this with a grain of salt), Jolie was bothered by Depp's partying, tardiness and general bad attitude, while Depp viewed his co-star as uptight and self-centered.

Have they reconciled? If the rumors are true, then yes, Jolie reportedly gave Depp advice when he was considering getting engaged to his fiancée Amber Heard. Then again, the advice is "don't do it", so who knows how that will turn out.

Shirley MacLaine and Anthony Hopkins

20th Century Fox

Movie: Seasons Change

Question: Hopkins calls his co-star "the most annoying actress I've ever worked with."

Have they reconciled? This is questionable. When asked about her former co-star's unkind remarks (Hopkins isn't the first to criticize the actress), MacLaine had this succinct response: "That's their problem."

Deborah Winger & Richard Gere

Lorima Productions

Movie: An Officer and a Gentleman

The problem: a violent fight (largely blamed on Winger) that ended with the actress calling the making of the film one of the worst experiences of her life.

Have they reconciled? In 2002, Wenger seemed to indicate that while she and Kier were not exactly friends, they were moving on from their feuding days. "I meet Richard Gere all the time," she said, "and he says, half-jokingly: 'Are you still talking bad about me?'"
