Just in case you haven't thought about the theories about who Rey's parents are, or whether Kylo Ren is actually committed to the dark side, there's one more interesting story quietly coming out since Star Wars: The Force Awakens Land appeared on Tumblr came out first. Many of you are wondering, is it possible that our friend Finn is Force-sensitive? When you squint your eyes, there's a lot of evidence that might point to this.
Of course, the idea was already not-so-subtly planted in everyone's minds when Finn introduced the nerddom in the movie's trailer by wielding a lightsaber. Another subtle twist in the movie seems to hint that Finn definitely has Force potential. Some even say that Finn himself is Skywalker, and that all the theories about Rey being Luke's daughter are just a diversion. While I've dissected Rey and Finn's origins so much that I've spent too many "Jesus Takes the Wheel" moments with them to really dissect the possibility in this post, There are still plenty of canon hints that Finn might be just as Force-sensitive as the Rey we know he is. Here are some parts of the movie you may have missed:
Snoke refers to Rey's pre-visionary awakening
Supreme Leader Snoke : Awakened. Can you feel it? Kylo Ren : Yes. Supreme Leader Snoke : Dark Side and Light Side. The droid you're looking for is aboard the Millennium Falcon in the hands of your father, Han Solo.
This scene takes place before Rey hears the lightsaber call and before Rey actually does anything of note besides escaping Jakku with Finn. Do you know what crazy things would happen before Snooker said those words? Finn became the first stormtrooper in the history of the First Order to defect and escape from the base. Of course, Kylo Ren sensed it—enough that he was able to identify Finn by his exact number. Ren didn't seem like the type to bother telling the Stormtroopers apart, even if he suspected the Stormtroopers were acting strangely.
This would explain why he was the only Stormtrooper to defect
The First Order seemed very confident that their "renovation" would work on the Stormtroopers, and Finn was the first to actually defect. Not only that, but so is his nature, unshakable excellence . Given his upbringing, this was simply impossible. He has been brainwashed since he was a child . The only minds that can survive multiple attempts to "fix" it will be Force-sensitive.
This would explain why Captain Phasma dropped his shield
People are outraged that Phasma almost flips over when she's threatened - and that's fair enough. The First Order seems extremely loyal to their cause, and a captain would certainly be more than willing to sacrifice his life to protect a massive project that took an unfathomable amount of time and money to build. She objectively knew that saving her own life wasn't worth the entirety of Starkiller Base, or all the highly trained stormtroopers who died on the base. So why should she listen to Finn? The only reasonable explanation is - he used the Force to force her.
The lightsaber is an iconic image
It's no accident that Maz gave Finn his lightsaber, or that they let him fight with it. There's really no reason for the filmmakers to put this image in our heads, unless they're giving us a potentially Force-sensitive Finn to kick ass. And they did it not once, but twice . Finn gets more action with the lightsaber than Rey does, and she's the main character.
He survived Jakku
Finn survives his journey to the deserted Nima Outpost, surrounded by countless things that could kill him, including man-eating sand. The movie doesn't go into great detail about this, but a quick read of the movie's novelization or Rey's survival guide and it's actually shocking that he discovered civilization with just a few vague senses.
He's been fighting Kylo Ren for much longer than he should have been
I know, I know—Ren is hurt. But consider this, Finn should be able to predict every move Finn makes despite the fact that Kylo Ren worked for the First Order and observed all Stormtrooper training, but Finn was in a confrontation with Kylo Ren China has always maintained its position. You could tell by the genuine frustration on Wren's face that Finn had surprised him. If anything, the fact that Wren so adamantly yells "traitor" at Finn is further proof that something is fishy. Why would Ren be so angry about a seemingly expendable Stormtrooper leaving the team? Unless Ren was spying on him, because he definitely knew what Finn was capable of from the beginning.
People seem to think Finn sensed attacks on the Republic before they appeared in the sky
Yes, Finn knows the capabilities of the First Order better than any observer on Takodana. But people speculate based on clips from the film that Finn actually seemed to hear the screams of people on the attacked planet and looked up into the sky before anyone else saw the red streak. Tumblr user meetthedamerons shared these current GIFs:
Here you can see him turning around as if reacting to the sound - from his vantage point there is absolute silence, not nearly enough light to attract the attention of anyone with his back to it, and in broad daylight under.
Of course, his next few actions - reminding them that this is the First Order - absolutely make sense because he knows what the First Order is capable of. The distinct ripples he felt beforehand seemed to indicate Force sensitivity.
So basically, Luke's going to train Rey, Leia's going to low-key train Finn, and then they're going to have a happy, cute Jedi Summer Camp(TM) for the next generation of Jedi, and Kylo Ren is going to be basket-weaving, and everything Everything will be fine . Okay, okay, all my nonsense aside, it's more than just coincidence that all of these pieces of the puzzle about Finn come together. I've been waiting for a Force-sensitive Finn, and when it comes to fruition in 2017, I'll be the first to scream in the theater.
