#ReclaimHalloween Feminist Clothing Ideas

It's no secret that there's a huge double standard when it comes to sexy Halloween costumes, and the fact that a holiday that's supposed to be about children and dead people is now an excuse to objectify women is kind of awful. But now, So She Did is launching a "Take Back Halloween" campaign.

"Reclaiming Halloween is about redefining where our confidence and self-esteem comes from," the organization explains. "As we all know, Halloween is a holiday where women are treated as objects and 'sexy xyz' costumes are marketed. We want to #ReclaimHalloween and celebrate our Sexy version.”

To further that goal, they have a ton of costume ideas that don't involve being a sexy mouse, a sexy maid, or a sexy ladybug (because really, a sexy ladybug?). Because while women who want to look sexy on Halloween or any other day of the year should be perfectly free to do so, the assumption that every girl should show skin has gotten out of control. Just browse the aisles at your local Halloween costume store and you'll quickly realize that it's much easier to find costumes that are both offensive and appropriate than ones that are less sexy. What a mess.

So, if you're like me and still looking for last-minute costume ideas, the #ReclaimHalloween campaign will provide you with non-sexy costumes depicting some of the inspiring, confident women who also rock the other 364 days of Halloween. That year (unlike sexy ladybug). From Beyoncé to Diana Nyad to classic Rosie the Riveter, these are ideas you can put together yourself, and as an added bonus , may actually make you feel warm.

Look how cool some of them look!

There's Coco Chanel and some Rosie the Riveter.

Katniss Everdeen is instantly recognizable and, as an added bonus, comes with a built-in jacket for chilly October nights.

Serena Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Amelia Earhart and Frida Kahlo were all hanging out. Now I really want to watch Ellen's episode.

On the left is Rosalind Franklin, who discovered the double helix, and on the right is singer Stevie Nicks.

Let’s be honest, you can never have too much Rosie the Riveter.
