A few weeks ago, it was announced that Nina Dobrev would be returning for the series finale of The Vampire Diaries . I'll give you a moment to get excited again, because this is super exciting news for fans of the show. " The Vampire Diaries" wouldn't have had a satisfying ending without her eventual return. However, now fans are wondering when her character Elena will return to TVD . Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have to wait a few more weeks for her return, as she's only back to film the show's final episode.
"I'm so excited to have Nina back to make sure our farewell episode is truly epic!" co-creator Kevin Williamson revealed of her return to Deadline. Meanwhile, Dobrev posted a photo of the final script on Instagram, meaning Elena Gilbert is unlikely to return before the finale.
The last time we saw Elena (excluding the Miss Mystic Falls flashback in Season 1) was in the Season 6 finale, when Kai came to Alaric and Joe's wedding and murdered her, then turned on Elena and Bonnie cast a spell. Yeah, he's pretty much the most annoying antagonist on the show, so I'm super glad he's back. Notice the sarcasm. The deal was that when Bonnie died, Elena would wake up again, so she'd been refrigerated in the box for several years. And, fans now know that Elena will be back in the finale no matter what. The show even teased the show's ending with a 10-second clip in which Elena asks what happened and why she's back so soon.
So how will our sleeping beauty finally be awakened? Here are some theories.
Kai will lift the spell
Well, I've never been one to trust Kai, but he's back and making some pretty big promises. At the end of the last episode, he said he could wake Elena up because he was the one who put the spell on her. I'm pretty sure he's never lived up to his promise since we met him, and we still have a few episodes before she comes back, so I think that's probably not going to be the case with Kai helping out.
Bonnie will die
If this were true, it would be devastating. We have lost Enzo and losing Bonnie will be heartbreaking too. If Bonnie dies, the spell will resurrect Elena. This is actually what's supposed to happen, but I don't want to say goodbye to Bon Bon.
they will find loopholes
Over the past eight seasons, the Mystic Falls team has generally been able to find a loophole in every situation, most of the time. Whether it's bringing back the dead, killing Silas, reversing mistakes, etc., I feel like this will be another time where they all work together to find loopholes. The ideal scenario would be for Bonnie to regain her magic and break the spell. I support this choice.
She hasn't really woken up yet
This season we see characters return in very strange ways, but most importantly Damon's subconscious. What if the Elena we saw in the series finale isn't actually alive now? What if we saw her somewhere in another universe? This is The Vampire Diaries after all, anything is possible.
Damon and Elena both die
Maybe the show will end with Damon and Elena together, but they won't be alive. Maybe they can create a new "other side" and that's how Damon and Elena finally get back together. This would be a very interesting twist. Unlikely, but you never know!

I feel like if anyone had the power to escape an evil spell, it would probably be the devil. I feel like most of our past villains ended up helping the group in one way or another. Klaus always does crappy stuff, but every once in a while he has a good moment. Maybe it will be Cade's who awakens Elena. Regardless, don't worry, we'll see Elena in the final episode in some way.
