Unlike Furby, Polly Pocket, and Tamagotchi (so many great memories! #tbt), there is one best-selling toy of Christmas past that is still going strong decades later. Power Rangers were the most popular toy of Christmas 1994 and even now they are still in high demand. While Power Rangers toys may have stood the test of time, today's action figures aren't exactly the same as the original toys that first hit shelves 20 years ago. Because it's the holidays, and because we're nostalgic, we decided to see how much the original Power Rangers toys are worth today. Spoiler alert: not much.
This powerful series first launched in 1993 and was inspired by the Japanese Super Sentai superhero team television show produced by Toei. Power Rangers now has 21 seasons and counting, as well as two theatrical movies. Looks like "Transformation time!" still makes little hearts beat. People are certainly ready to pay - Power Rangers sold $80 million in toys in 2012.
In 1994, Power Rangers was the best-selling toy, with each statue selling for just $10. Believe it or not, the price of these figures hasn't really gone up since then - you can still buy a basic figure on Amazon for under $10. Much cheaper than Beanie Babies (which now retail for a whopping $625,000 on eBay) or American Girl Dolls (some of which can set you back $700) — yikes!
If it's some collectibles you're craving, you don't have to dig deep into your pockets. In fact, you can buy all five of the original Power Rangers games (from 1993!) on eBay for $42.50. Not bad at all. What a thoughtful note from the seller, letting the buyer know that the toy has "bits and pieces from play" [sic]. I can imagine an adult sporting a trendy bowl haircut and sweet turtleneck, fondly recalling the good times they had playing with these figures.
However, if you're looking for a specific statue that's still in the box, that might give you a little more pause. This 1994 Mighty Morphin Green Ranger has a head that flips over to "Power Ranger" mode and sells for $45.
Or, get all 5 new in the box for $90.
Want to buy a nice deluxe Thunderzord Megazord figure for Christmas 1994? Put it on eBay and you'll make an extra $140.
Still, it's definitely not a bad deal, especially when you look at what Power Rangers retails for today. Power Rangers is still going strong, but the basic statues aren't the most popular anymore - kids these days, they want all the bells and whistles (I don't sound old, do I?). Take for example this popular toy on Amazon: Power Rangers Super Megaforce - Legendary Megazord. I don't even know how one toy can contain so much "giant". At $56.99, this beautiful Power Ranger was significantly more expensive than the original statue, and still is.
Still, it's nice to see something with staying power. And make sure your niece keeps all her Frozen merchandise — seriously, how much will these fetch on eBay in 2034?
