Fifty years after it appeared on supermarket shelves, tropical-flavored soft drink Lilt is no more. According to the BBC, Coca-Cola announced that Lilt has been renamed Fanta Pineapple & Grapefruit starting from February 14 and will be gradually sold in stores across the UK.
Although now sold under the Fanta brand, the company assures Lilt fans that the tropical drink's ingredients will remain the same. Coca-Cola describes the popular drink as a "sparkling soft drink" that is "inspired by the flavors of the Caribbean" and contains "real pineapple and grapefruit juice for a completely tropical taste."
"Our first priority with this announcement is to reassure Lilt's loyal fans about the iconic nature of the drink they know and love," Fanta brand manager Charlotte Walsham said in a statement. Absolutely nothing has changed about the taste. "It just gave itself a new name."
Outside the UK, Lilt is also sold to countries including Ireland, Gibraltar and the Seychelles. Following the announcement that the drink was about to undergo a Fanta rebrand, many loyal Lilt drinkers took to social media to express their thoughts on the "weird and sad" change.
"Lilt is discontinued. I guess I don't want to live in a world without Lilt. What's the point?" joked one Twitter user. Another added: "I haven't had a tipple in years but I'm still angry it was discontinued."
Meanwhile, others are wondering why Lilt was pulled from shelves while other drinks are still on sale. "Lilt is dead...but Vanilla Coke is alive. Weird world," one Twitter user mused.
