The colorful world of #WaterTok

You may have heard of the “Outfit of the Day” videos on TikTok, but what about “Water of the Day”? Instead of deciding what cute water bottle to use that day, a new #WaterTok trend encourages people to mix and match flavored water additives to create some seriously sweet concoctions. The ridiculous viral world of #WaterTok has taken over social media platforms, so don't be surprised if all the flavor packs have completely disappeared from the shelves the next time you go to the grocery store.

Everything TikTok has its niche, they say, and the recent Water of the Day craze is no exception. Like preparing or cooking dinner with me In my videos, #WaterTok enthusiasts invite their followers to "make" their water routines with them and share water "recipes" they want them to try next. The creators take viewers through the entire process from filling the bottles with water and ice to adding various flavor enhancers and syrups. The end result usually results in a liquid mixture that no longer looks like water, which may be key to staying hydrated if you're someone who hates drinking water or you're just looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth.

As you might imagine, the comments on #WaterTok had people debating whether the end result was actually water, or if it was just a glorified bottle of Kool-Aid. The conversation has even sparked debate over whether the trend is another aspect of diet culture making its way into the mainstream, with experts concerned that these "daily water" videos are promoting more than just hydration. Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, told Today.com that people with eating disorders may be tempted to trade their food for a Stanley Cup filled with flavored water.

It's unclear who brought you the FYP fad, but as of April 19, the #WaterTok hashtag has amassed more than 144.1 million views. @takemylifebackat42 is one of the main creators of this trend, making a different daily water flavor every day and giving each recipe a unique name, such as Orange Mermaid Water (Mermaid Orange Coconut Flavor by Jordan's Skinny Syrups Enhancer and Sunkist Orange Flavored Packets) and Grandma's Salad Water (aka Jordan's Pistachio and Cherry Flavored Syrup) Skinny Syrup and Crushed Pineapple Flavor).

All of the TikToker's homemade creations are made at her designated "water bar" station, which offers water and coffee syrup in a variety of flavors, including marshmallow, dragon fruit acai, and salted caramel.

Meanwhile, TikToker and school teacher @keelylindler picks her Water of the Day flavor from a range of carefully organized flavor packs every morning. Some of the flavor pack brands chosen by the creators include Sunkist, Arnold Palmer, Sonic, Gatorade and Skittles.

One of the creator's most viewed Daily Water videos featuring Starburst's Blueberry flavor and Mio Lemonade spray has been viewed over 1.6 million times. The teacher has also been known to take her daily drinks to the next level by swapping out regular water for sparkling water, which she recommends pouring in after the condiments and syrups.

The trend has become so popular that people are even going viral by creating their own "hydration stations" at home, like @theamyyevelyn, whose "Daily Water" setup includes flavor packs from Nerds, Wyler's Light, and more.

This isn't the first time a flavored drink has gone viral on TikTok. In April 2022, a soda craze hit Utah, and users outside the Beehive State learned that Utahns were adding various additives to their sodas, such as coffee creamer, lime juice, and even milk. Of course, not everyone was on board with the soda-enhancing trend at the time, so it's no surprise that users had some thoughts on the new #WaterTok movement.

The craze has been parodied by TikTokers like @chronic.oversharer and @danjamescomedy, who have created their own Water of the Day recipes that even the most devoted WaterTokers wouldn't dare try: beef stew with country greens and apple marshmallow candies - Lemon-lime-coconut.

However, other creators appear to be following the trend. User @averagemac perfectly summed up how easily #WaterTok can be sucked into a wormhole, while @mckennawaller may admit to being a member of the "TikTok made me buy it" camp.
