Cass's series follows the story of an oppressed American singer who (sometimes reluctantly) competes for the heart of Prince Maxon in her dystopian world through a Bachelor- style television competition. America was chosen at random by chance and pulled from her life of poverty to live in a castle while competing for the right to become queen. Of course, there's another problem: America's true love, Aspen, is also at the castle, assigned to the Royal Guard. Not only does she begin to discover the truth about other women who are willing to do whatever it takes to win, but she begins to discover the truth about her entire world.
