The psychological thriller "Secret Obsession," released on Netflix on July 18, looks like a hair-raising suspense ride. The film stars Brenda Song as Jennifer, a woman who loses her memory after being attacked at a rest stop. Russell (Mike Vogel), who claimed to be her husband, took her home to a large cabin in the woods to recover, but as her spirit healed, Jennifer's memory began to return, and she became obsessed with Russell. Assumptions about Searle's true identity began to be questioned. Dennis Haysbert plays a detective on Jennifer's case. There are so many realistic-sounding procedures and medical aspects that appear in this movie that you might be wondering if Secret Obsession is based on a true story.
"Secret Obsession" doesn't appear to be based on any real events, which is a good thing because Russell doesn't seem to be exactly who he says he is. Even if there's no clear and present threat, it can be terrifying to not remember if you're married to someone, where you live, or even who you are. However, the movie looks very predictable. Russell is destined to be an evil twin or an old boyfriend or some kind of stalker. But that doesn't mean watching Jennifer solve mysteries can't be fun and exciting.
It turns out that the type of amnesia Jennifer suffers from doesn't seem to be as rare as you might think. Fans of romantic movies may remember the 2012 film The Vow starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. McAdams plays a woman who cannot remember the last five years of her life due to a car accident. As a result, she has no memory of her husband, her marriage, or her many friends.
The story is based on the true experiences of Kim and Krickett Carpenter, who went through a similar ordeal just 10 weeks after they were married. There are many other stories about couples who have had to rekindle romances or start relationships over due to brain injuries. Thankfully, these stories don't involve murder and horror like "Secret Obsession."
So while there are plenty of real-life examples of couples surviving with one partner losing their memory, Secret Obsession seems to abandon the more realistic story of amnesia and a forgotten spouse in favor of something scarier and more thrilling storyline. Song doesn't mind this, telling Refinery29, "I think people (including me) just like to scare themselves ... Obviously, having a stalker is no joke, but stalker movies are so fascinating and scary."
The inherent predictability of "Secret Obsession " shouldn't prevent you from enjoying the film, either. Song also told the site, "The audience actually finds out about the twist before my character does. I think the exciting part of the movie is trying to help Jennifer catch up."
So that you know exactly what kind of movie you're watching, you need to know that "Secret Obsession" comes from Peter Sullivan - the man behind "The Wrong Stepmother," "The Wrong Mom," and "The Wrong Mom" ” writer of the Lifetime thriller series. "The Wrong Love" and many more starring Vivica A. Fox.
Now that Netflix has successfully become a source of original romantic comedies, with movies like Set It Up , To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and Always Be Mine Maybe attracting fans, the streaming giant appears to be moving toward sexiness The same goes for thrillers.
