How great is Jane's father Rogelio in Jane the Virgin ? He simultaneously managed to steal the show with his signature quips and break all of our hearts with last Monday's bombshell - this kind of character dynamic is no easy feat. When you think about it, he is perfect in every way. From his perfect hair, to his charming smile, to his comic timing and uncanny sincerity. He's quickly become one of the many (many, many!) reasons to tune into the show every week, and there's definitely a reason for it. Well, by now you've probably heard that the actor behind this scene-stealing role, Jaime Camil, is a TV star just like his character. But is that where all their similarities end? Is it possible that Rogelio is based on the real-life actor Camille?
It's hard to think of the former eponymous star of Santos as a character who came entirely from someone's imagination - there's something about his trademark exaggeration that really screams reality. There haven't been any rumors about him being based on any specific TV actor, but is there any possibility that international star Camille's career/life/personality influenced the creation of Rogelio de la Vega? Let's look at what we know and see what matches.
Family life
Unlike the playboy Rogelio, Camille is married. Although Camille and Heidi Balbanera didn't get married until 2013, they have been together for 11 years. They even have a three-year-old daughter and four-month-old son together, with no long-lost pregnant virgin in sight!
career trajectory
So, as Rogelio often says, until five years ago he was a struggling actor. That's not the case for Camille, who has been a big star for over a decade (he got his big break in 2000).
TV series history
Rogelio is best known for his role in the TV series "The Passion of Santos" , in which he played the title role. Santos is a guy who does pretty much every soap opera convention we've ever seen, including portraying a priest seducing someone in a confessional, dressing up as a pirate to hide from other pirates, and generally wearing a military uniform and, for unknown reasons, lavender.
Camil's work format, on the other hand, is actually more akin to sitcoms than soap operas—in a recent interview with Vulture, he called them "the comedic side of Mexican television." Oh, and by the way, his most famous show is La Fea Mas Bella , which was inspired by the same show as Ugly Betty ( for Ugly Betty fans, he Played the role of Daniel Meade).
Okay, so we've established that the character and the actor are two very different people. But want to know what weird similarities they have?
Whose signature red carpet pose includes a thumbs up?
This guy, Rogelio, would definitely approve of this move (he might even wink in agreement).
