On the April 4 episode of "Grey's Anatomy ," Arizona Robbins returns to Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital to undergo innovative fetal brain surgery. But while medical history is being made, the real question on many fans' minds is naturally... are Callie and Arizona in New York?
Sadly, Arizona didn't discuss her relationship status during her visit to Seattle. Of course, most people she interacts with probably know what she's doing. But still! It certainly doesn't hurt to hear one side or the other, especially since Arizona's exit six years ago seemed to leave room for a positive relationship with Kelly - with the women reuniting in New York to raise their daughter, Sophia, together. "Every time I get a text from Callie, I smile," Arizona said in the Season 14 finale.
In the absence of any news from Arizona, fans have looked to other clues — like her jewelry, or lack thereof — for clues about her personal life.
a missing heart
During the April 4 episode, Arizona showed off her classic, happy side. She even calls a new class of interns "little surgeons," a play on her nickname for her pediatric patients, "little humans."
However, there is one notable absence: Arizona's gold heart necklace. In many of Callie and Arizona's scenes together in the past, the pair have worn matching heart necklaces (Arizona's was gold, Callie's was silver).
But instead of wearing her pendant, Arizona wore a gold chain during the April 4 episode. As a user on The jewelry would be a way to "remotely hint" at Calzona's fate.
Perhaps the loss of the ring could be explained: for example, perhaps she pinned it somewhere out of sight. Technically, Callie and Arizona could be together without remarrying. But as for the necklace, Arizona wears it multiple times throughout the series. Of course, that token would also make a comeback if she was with Kelly in any meaningful way.
Can Calzona survive?
While some viewers were disturbed by the obvious implication that Calzona was not "the endgame," others tried to hold out hope. For example, multiple viewers wrote that Arizona talks to her patients about pain having a "purpose" and "there's another side to life," which could be a symbolic nod to Kelly starting over after a messy breakup.
Grey's Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis told Deadline that Jessica Capshaw will return for one episode as Arizona, but who knows what the future holds. Between the newly renewed Grey's Anatomy Season 21 and the just-announced podcast between Capshaw and co-star Camilla Luddington, it seems likely Calzona's conversations will continue.
