Why 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Fans Will Love This Witty 'Chilling Adventures' Character

Despite the basic premise and the relationship between Sabrina and her aunts Hilda and Zelda, it doesn't take a crystal ball to tell you that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is no Melissa... A remake of the Joan Hart series. The terrifying new Netflix series is based on the 2014 comic of the same name from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of Riverdale and the new series. That said, while Cousin Ambrose has appeared in the Chilling Adventures comics and other Archie Comics stories about the Spellmans, he may remind you more of a character from the original series— —Salem.

Yes, Salem the Cat appears in Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina , but he doesn't speak, and it's not clear at first if he's actually a warlock sentenced to feline life (as in Like the 90's version) of the character). Instead, Sabrina's British cousin Ambrose plays the role of a caricatured ex-con, offering questionable advice to Sabrina as she journeys through the mortal and magical worlds.

According to a casting report for the series:

Ambrose is Sabrina's cousin and a necromancer. He's witty, mischievous, pansexual - and loves being a witch. Trapped in a funeral parlor under a spell, Ambrose lives in the morgue's attic and is one of Sabrina's partners in crime.

In the comics, Ambrose Spellman in Chilling Adventures is very similar to him in the Netflix series, at least in basic ways. The recently evicted Ambrose lived with the Spellman family in the first issue. According to Hilda and Zelda, he's from the "old country," and Sabrina thinks his accent sounds like Ringo Starr. Ambrose also had pets/pets: two cobras named Nag and Nagaina. When Ambrose and Sabrina first met, he told her he was born for drama.

While Ambrose didn't appear in the '90s live-action Sabrina, Teenage Witch , or Sabrina: The Animated Series , this isn't the first time the character has appeared in the Archie Universe . In the earlier comics, Ambrose was a stylish performer in the Spellman family and was Sabrina's adult rather than her peer. Most recently, Ambrose was imagined as a witch-in-training in the short-lived Sabrina: Secret of the Teenage Witch , voiced by actor Andrew Francis.

Cousin Ambrose was also a character in the vibrant 1970s animated series Sabrina the Teenage Witch . This is showman Ambrose. He talks jazzy stuff and he owns a magic shop! In short, he doesn't look much like the Ambrose you saw on Chilling Adventures .

In the Netflix series, Ambrose's role is more important than in the comics. He's not just there to assist the aunts with funeral home arrangements and service Sabrina's storyline. Ambrose had his own desires and goals. Plus, he may be confined to his home, but he's not exempt from the drama. Based on Ambrose's performance in nearly every iteration of the character so far, that's exactly what he likes.
