Selena Gomez is living out her Sex and the City fantasy, planning to break up with a boyfriend on "Soon to Be Single," leaving fans wondering if she was referring to someone specific. A new theory speculates that the 31-year-old singer's new single "Single Soon" is about one of her famous exes, The Weeknd. However, on August 27, Gomez responded to the rumors and told fans the truth.
Hollywood Life took to Instagram to post the theory, sharing a red carpet photo of the former couple and saying "her fans think it has something to do with her romance with #TheWeeknd." Gomez responded to the post Comments confirmed that this speculation is "completely wrong."
That said, there's legitimate reason for listeners to think "Single Soon" could be about Gomez's breakup with the 33-year-old singer. As part of the first verse, she sings, "I don't wanna see the tears, the weekend is coming." Of course, some fans thought she was using "weekend" as a pun, but others also thought "see a Tears" could be a reference to His 2020 single "Save Your Tears," which became a No. 1 single a year later thanks to a remix with Ariana Grande.
However, fans didn't notice any signs that Gomez's new single had nothing to do with her ex. "Single Soon" was allegedly written during the sessions for her 2020 album Rare , but was not recorded. If true, the song would predate "Save Your Tears," making it an unlikely reference point.
Gomez was first linked to The Weeknd in January 2017, and they broke up ten months later. While the two have never commented on their breakup, it turns out they remain on friendly terms with each other. Gomez even included his After Hours song "Snowchild" in a 2020 playlist she shared on Instagram. "Selena is a fan of The Weeknd and his music," a source told Us Weekly at the time. "She had no negative feelings toward him. They were warm."
