Long before TikTok and its many viral dances, there was a choreographed craze for music videos. One of the videos is "Crazy In Love."
It was 2003, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter had just begun her solo career, officially wrapping up her run on Destiny's Child. In May of the same year, she used "Crazy In Love", a collaboration with her boyfriend Jay-Z, as the title song of her first studio album "Dangerously In Love". The song foreshadowed Beyoncé's later success.
The music video is legendary: Jay-Z sings the intro while Beyoncé revs up in her signature pose. She then began her first verses, dedicated entirely to floor choreography, which she later performed on stages, bars and living rooms around the world. Her costume would become iconic—so iconic, in fact, that Beyoncé recreated it on stage during her Renaissance World Tour over the weekend.
Beyoncé first appeared in the video in 2003, wearing a shiny silver scoop tank top paired with denim booties. She accessorized the dress with a thin strap that peeked out from underneath the dress and a pair of crimson slingback heels.
She later changed to other bands, but the opening band was still the most unforgettable for her. That's probably why she decided to revisit the incident 20 years later.
On July 29, during her New Jersey tour, eagle-eyed Beyhive members noticed a special tribute band. As the recognizable beat of "Crazy In Love" began to play, Beyoncé strutted across the stage in a similar look to her video. Only this time, it's asianized (read: glittering enough to dazzle heaven).
The Ivy Park founder reinvented the tank top and hot pants combo, wearing a rhinestone-encrusted scoop-neck top and tucking it into crystal denim shorts. This time, instead of wearing red stilettos, Beyonce donned silver over-the-knee boots.
The shoes are covered with layers of tassels, each tassel individually encrusted with crystals. Glittery fringe added drama to her signature walk.
She further accessorized her stage look with a metallic silver Western hat (the singer's favorite hat on stage) and diamond-encrusted shoulder earrings.
While the rest of her concert looks were very stylish, this one was the most meaningful. She was truly in a renaissance moment.
