The Meaning Behind Lewis Capaldi's 'The One You've Loved' Is Actually Very Tender

Lewis Capaldi has accomplished the seemingly impossible: his song "Someone You Loved" has surpassed Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" to become the most played song in the UK song. According to Chart Company, Capaldi's singles have been played a whopping 562 million times, including audio and video streams. Capaldi, the self-proclaimed "King of Streaming," is understandably proud of the achievement. Not just because he beat Sheeran, but he also surpassed some of the world's greatest artists like The Beatles, Metallica, and Michael Jackson. "Don't worry guys, there's no hard feelings, I just have to accept this," he said. "Step back and let dad take the wheel, okay?"

"Someone You Loved" was released in 2018 as the third single from his second EP Breach and was later included on his debut album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent . It was his first UK number one single and stayed at the top of the charts for seven weeks.

To some, the ballad sounds like Capaldi's longing for a lost love - with reports suggesting the song is about his ex-girlfriend and Love Island alum Paige Turley. She even mentioned this in her Love Island VT and apologized to the singer if that was the case. But in an interview with Australia's V Music, he revealed that he wrote the song after suffering a bereavement. "It's about my grandmother, she's dead...she passed away a few years ago. Your typical death, not coming back kind of thing," he said.

"One day, after death, I sat down at the piano and started messing around," Capaldi continued. "Luckily, my grandma had just passed away and I went into a session and thought 'I can't write another heartbreaking ballad.'" He commented on the song at the 2020 BRIT Awards The same sentiment was expressed in his acceptance speech. Song of the Year, Capaldi said, "Contrary to popular belief... a lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend, who you see every night on Love Island now, but actually It's about my grandmother."

Nonetheless, he did tell NME that the song "reflects on the end of a relationship and the recent bereavement of two families."

[Section 1]

I'm about to collapse. This time, I'm afraid no one will come to save me.

All or nothing really drives me crazy

I need someone to listen, someone to understand

Some people own it, some people hold it

It's easy to say, but it's never the same

I guess I kind of like the way you numb all the pain

[chorus]

Now the day has turned into nightfall

And you're not here to help me get through this.

I let my guard down and you pulled out.

I'm a little used to being the one you love

[Poem 2]

I'm about to collapse and this time, I feel like I have no one to turn to

This all or nothing kind of love makes me sleep without you

Now I need someone to know, someone to listen

Want to have someone, just to know what it feels like

It's easy to say, but it's never the same

I guess I kind of like the way you helped me escape.

[chorus]

Now the day has turned into nightfall

And you're not here to help me get through this.

I let my guard down and you pulled out.

I'm a little used to being the one you love

[bridge]

Sometimes I close my eyes when it hurts

I throw myself into your arms

I'll be safe in your voice until I come back

[chorus]

Now the day has turned into dusk

And you're not here to help me get through this.

I let my guard down and you pulled out.

I'm used to being the person you love

But now day has turned into night

And you're not here to help me get through this.

I let my guard down and you pulled out.

I'm a little used to being the one you love

I let my guard down and you pulled out.

I'm a little used to being the one you love
