Want to settle in and watch a good movie? Me too. That's why I pored over the major streaming services' release schedules to bring you the best original and new streaming movies you can watch right now.

There's something to suit any taste this week. Netflix's Power is a hard-hitting documentary about the relationship between people and the police. Disney's remake of the 1970s documentary Let it Be details the Beatles' final creative process. You can even watch a movie about singing unicorns if you're interested.

strength

This month's high-priced Netflix originals may be comedy and period costumes, but there's a serious side, too, and that's reflected in "Power , " a critically acclaimed, hard-hitting documentary that explores our relationship with the police and asks how The question of "who is more powerful, who is more powerful". People or police? "Ball," directed by Academy Award nominee Yance Ford, examines the history of policing and asks hard questions about whether and how we are oppressed by boys and girls in blue.

Let It Go (1970)

Let it Be was originally a "Beatles in the Studio" TV documentary, but director Michael Lindsay-Hogg instead captured the biggest band of all time as they were about to break up. "Let It Go" was canned after a limited theatrical release and would not be legally released for 50 years, so Disney's restored and remastered versions are eagerly awaited by fans; even if you just like The Beatles, it's Also worth a look. Let it Be it clocks in at just under 90 minutes, and unlike Peter Jackson's exhaustive eight-hour documentary Get Back , it focuses on the music rather than the internal friction that would soon break up the band, leaving "The band was going to record Break up soon after it’s over” as subtext.

mrs webb

There's a saying in Hollywood: "Behind every bad movie is a good mortgage," and "Mrs. Weber" Just a perfect example. It's definitely not the best movie you can watch this weekend, but there's something fascinating about dissecting a high-profile failure. Dakota Johnson plays Cassandra "Cassie" Webber, aka Spider-Woman, and she's a good actress. "Network Madam" is a co-production between Marvel and Sony, so it has real money behind it. Superhero origin stories are inherently interesting. So what went wrong? Just watch it, and console yourself that many of the people involved bought houses.

59th Academy of Country Music Awards

All your favorite country stars will be in attendance at the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards . Billed as "Country Music Party of the Year," this year's event will be hosted by Reba McEntire, who will also perform new music during the show. It's an interesting time in country music, as the traditionally staid genre encounters a new wave of performers. The Entertainer of the Year category, for example, pits neo-traditionalists like Cody Johnson against new-school iconoclasts like face-tattooed, hip-hop-influenced artist Jelly Roll.

unicorn selma

This animated feature is directed by Jared Hess, whose first film Napoleon Dynamite was a quirky masterpiece, so Selma the Unicorn has the potential to be more interesting than your typical computer-animated, streaming-only kids movie. Based on Aaron Brabe's best-selling book and starring Brittany Howard, "Selma the Unicorn" tells the story of a pony who disguises herself as a unicorn to achieve her dream of becoming a music star. The film stars the voices of Jemaine Clement, Eddie Patterson, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, Jon Heder and Chaudrella Avery. They are a very strong team.

Last week's picks

Iron Claw(2023)

Although Claws was almost unanimously praised by critics , it did not receive any Oscar nominations. rip off! Maybe a movie about pro wrestling is too cheesy for the "Academy", but their loss. Yes, Iron Claw is about wrestling, but it's also about mourning, loss, and the resilience of family. Additionally, "Iron Claw" stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White ( "Bear ") and Harris Dickinson as the real-life Von Erich brothers, a wrestling dynasty , haunted by so much tragedy, they begin to believe they are cursed. After watching this movie, it's hard to argue with them.

Fire in the Sky (1993)

I recently watched a bunch of movies about people being abducted by aliens, and Fire in the Sky was one of the best. Despite receiving mixed reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, the film makes the most cliche of alien abduction stories scary by keeping everything as grounded and realistic as possible, until protagonist Travis Walton undergoes an ordeal UFO tour (with exploration). Then everything went bad. Fire in the Sky shows us the unfathomable, incomprehensible nature of aliens in a way that I found deeply disturbing. The fact that everything in the movie can be fact-checked against real life (except for the UFO trip, of course) makes it even more chilling.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

Picnic at Hanging Rock director Peter Weir went on to make Truman's World , but I preferred the mysterious atmosphere and slow burn of this film. Set in the early 1900s, the story follows a group of students from a nearby girls' boarding school as they head to Australia's Mount Macedon for a Valentine's Day picnic. While on the rocks, something happened - can't say exactly what - and only a few people came back. Beautifully shot and full of mystery, Picnic at Hanging Rock is a must-see.

Living with leopards

I'm a sucker for nature documentaries, so I was intrigued by this British-made film that details the lives of a pair of leopard cubs from birth to adulthood. Living with Leopards will give you an up close and personal look at the development of some of the most majestic creatures on earth.
