Olivia Munn announces she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The actor took to Instagram on March 13 to share a slideshow of photos from her cancer treatment, one of which featured her boyfriend John Mulaney and their 2-year-old son, Mal A photo of Malcolm at her bedside. "I hope that by sharing this, I can help others find comfort, inspiration and support in their own journeys," she wrote.
Moon also included an emotional letter detailing her diagnosis and journey so far. “I needed to catch my breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing.”
The letter stated that in February 2023, Munn underwent a genetic test that checked 90 cancer genes and the results were all negative, including the dominant breast cancer gene BRCA. Two months later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and 30 days later, she underwent a double mastectomy. "I went from feeling completely normal one day to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next," she wrote.
Munn said it would have been another year before she received her diagnosis if her doctor, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, had not decided to calculate her breast cancer risk assessment score, which was 37 percent. That score ultimately led to biopsy results showing both breasts had Luminal B cancer, which she described as "an aggressive, fast-moving cancer."
"I'm very lucky," she said. "We have enough time to catch it and give me a choice. I wish the same help would be available to all the women who may have to face this one day. Ask your doctor to calculate your breast cancer risk assessment score." "
Moon said that in the past 10 months, she's had "ten surgeries, spent more days in bed than I can even count, and learned more about cancer, cancer treatments and hormones." , which was more than she imagined. "Surprisingly, I only cried twice," she added. "I guess I don't think I have time to cry yet."
Moon thanked her friends for "guiding me through some of the most uncertain and overwhelming moments," her medical team, including "guardian angel" Dr. Alia Badi, and, of course, Mulaney.
"I am so grateful to John who spent several nights researching what each surgery and medication entailed and what side effects and recovery I could expect," she wrote. “I was there before every surgery and I was there when I woke up, always with a picture of our little boy Malcolm in a frame so it was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”
Many of Moon's peers and loved ones expressed their support in Instagram comments, including Kaley Cuoco, who thanked her for sharing her story, and Grams, who sent "so much love and strength." Kristin Davis. Mulaney also offered heartfelt comments. "Thank you for fighting so hard for us," he said. "Marc and I love you very much."
