Emma Stone's costume malfunction wasn't the only stage mishap at the 96th Academy Awards. Michelle Yeoh confused fans when she handed Stone's Oscar to Jennifer Lawrence at the awards show, and the "Everything At Once" actor has now explained why.
Michelle Yeoh presented the Best Actress award alongside past Oscar winners Sally Field, Jessica Lange and Charlize Theron, who all gave short speeches to pay tribute to this year's nominees (Stone, Lily Gladstone, Carey Mulligan, Annette Bening and Sandra Wheeler) paid tribute before announcing that Stone was best known for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things Awarded for performance.
When Michelle Yeoh took the stage to receive her trophy, she presented the Oscar to Lawrence, who then presented the award to a visibly confused Stone. The seemingly awkward interaction caught the attention of some viewers online, and Michelle Yeoh later took to Instagram to clarify what exactly happened.
"Congratulations Emma!! I confuse you but I wanted to share the glorious moment of handing you the Oscar with your best friend Jennifer," she explained in the caption, alongside a photo of her and Si Photos of Tong hugging at the awards ceremony. "She reminds me of my Jamie Lee Curtis. Always there for each other!!"
After finally receiving her statuette, Stone gave an emotional shout-out to her fellow nominees and acknowledged the efforts of the cast and crew of "Poor Things."
"That night, I was panicking, and as you see, this happens a lot. Maybe something like this could happen, and [director] Yorgos [Lansmos] said to me, 'Please get yourself out of here It,'" the actor said on stage at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. "He's right, because it's not about me. It's about a team coming together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. That's the best part of making a movie."
