Jennifer Garner is looking back on a particularly "emotional" audition. In an interview with The Ringer 's "Dear Felicity" podcast, the actor recalled trying out for a role on the TV series "Felicity," which aired from 1998 to 2002.
Her first audition — “it had to be the breakup scene,” she says — was in front of “Felicity” creators JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves.
"I remember walking into the bathroom afterwards and I wanted to cry," said Garner, who eventually landed a guest role. “I needed to hide in the bathroom and finish the crying that started during the audition because it was a very powerful scene.”
Garner said in an interview with podcast host Greg Grunberg that Abrams encouraged her to re-audition for the role. “That makes sense to me,” Grunberg interjected. "Because you're not very good. I totally get it. I mean, notes, notes - you know? Let me give her a note to take home."
Garner later clarified that she prefers to get "a lot of feedback" during auditions. "I love working with JJ and Matt," she continued. "They don't just say, 'Okay, that looks good. Do you have another one in mind? They have an idea and will help guide you to the best version of whatever is presented."
The " 13 Going on 30" star concluded, "After reading it the first time, I was really invested in, 'Oh my gosh, I really want to do this.'"
Garner is married to another Felicity actor
"Felicity" aired for four seasons and focused on the college experience of protagonist Felicity Porter (played by Keri Russell) as she left her hometown in California to attend New York University.
Garner played Noel Crans' ex-girlfriend Hannah Bieber in seasons one and two, played by her then-husband Scott Foley.
Shortly after, Garner reunited with co-creator J.J. Abrams on the science fiction drama The Spy ( 2001–2006), in which Garner played CIA agent Sidney Bush. Risto.
